In general I'm having great performance with my visual settings with Pitool Pimax 5Ksettings as posted elsewhere , but yesterday I noticed that flying in FC WW1 aircraft the aircraft themselves were really ,really dark.It didn't seem to matter if I was flying one , with a chosen skin , or one of the AI aircraft. They appeared to be in a dark shadow with all detail very difficult to see in external views. and to some degree in cockpit as well. The landscape didn't appear to be nearly as negatively effected. The only other time I've see this dark value effect seems to be in the cockpits of the p=38 ,P-51 ,& the Hawker Tempest, all of which I have to turn of cockpit lights to get a really good look at the instrument faces. The rest of the cockpit detail gets sort of lost in blacks. I have Brightness cranked up to 2 and contrast at -1.Is there another setting I should be trying?

Thanks!

I am very happy since the official release version (unlike before) and have completely reviewed my settings to get the best results I can with the changes that have been introduced with the new verson.  I have been able to get very good results by changing both brightness and contrast to default settings in PiTool.

My overall brightness setting is set to normal and render quality set to maximum (2).

I am using 'small' FOV and find that I don't miss the 'normal' setting that I used to use.

My refresh rate is set to 72 Hz.

I am using the release version of PiTool, not the beta version.

As a side note, I am now using the new nvidia Image Sharpening 3d setting and have set it to full (1.00), with IFG set to 0.17.

I can now see contacts high and low much better than before and the cockpits look great, including Flying Circus :)

In-game, I have vsync, ssao and hdr all set to off.  Gamma correction set to 1, antialiasing set to 2, clouds set to extreme, grass normal, landscape filter off, horizon draw 150k, distant landscape x4, mirrors off, shadows quality off.  Sharpen and 4k textures are turned on and distant buildings turned off.

These are my nvidia 3d settings in full:

Image Sharpening-on, sharpen 1.00, ifg 0.17
Amb Occ-not supported
Anisotripic filt-global app controlled
Antialiaing FXAA-global off
Ant FXAA-global off
Ant gamma correct-global off
Ant mode-global app controlled
Ant setting-global app ctrl
Ant Trans-8x supersample
CUDA GPUs-global all
Low latency mode-Ultra
Multi fram samp A MFAA-On
OpenGL rend GPU-global auto select
Power mngt mode-Pref max perf
Shader cache-global on
Text filt anistropic-off
Text filt neg LOD bias-clamp
Text filt quality-high quality
Text filt trilinear opt-on
Threaded opt-global auto
Triple buff-global off
Vert sync-off
VR prerendered frames-1

P.S.  I have found that with cockpit lights turned on I get a lower frame rate, so I don't use cockpit lights any more.

Good luck and happy landings,

Im very curious about the settings also - I can do this and try that , but I have no 'know how's  ' what they are doing ....but

I have now tried the changes In nvidia , and I have the feeling it helped .... In Bergola .... Not many planes ....

PS , I'm a reverb

56_Talisman- Have changed all of my Nvidia settings as you have suggested & the improvements are real and positive. What I did not change were the in game “Ultra “ settings or medium settings with mirrors. My FPS are not as high as I might wish ( between 30-60 or so,) but the clarity of play is improved , inside & outside the aircraft. I am using the newest “Beta “version of  Pitool and playing a bit with Contrast & Brightness settings but right now am going with your settings.

I don’t know how you figured these settings out , but I DO want to thank you! ?

I don't intend to crash the party, but intend to simply inform you: You guys might want to know that, aside from the last line and default performance setting, the Nvidia settings do not affect VR. Now to what does make a change:

Shadows = 0 in-game is a new setting to me, I had never considered it. The game looks very weird without any shadows though. That's like playing WT on Ultra-Low-Quality to get rid of trees and grass. Aircraft glow on the ground, and there is a more static image. It may help with spotting. Personally, I cannot take the comic-like picture though.

PiTool = 2 is what changes a lot, but is very demanding and it's unclear what SteamVR SS is used - which acts as a multiplicator. So best is to post your actual resolution as shown in SteamVR's settings->video.

What I don't get is how you want to play in a Pimax5K+, but use small FOV. Are you a glasses wearer? That might explain a narrowed natural FOV, which is common among glass-wearers, so it may not disturb you. But a lot harder to check your own six this way. But why buy an expensive Pimax5K+ & headphones & everything it needs, then? But why not go with the cheaper Index then and save some money. That's like buying a Porsche in the Netherlands - you can go 100km/h max, anywhere.

Well must be the" placebo "effect then! I will change my in game settings as per your recommendations to High instead of Ultra. I will say that  I have never had as good of resolution with Pimax5K as i have now. This is good news as I can't afford the next generation just now.

BTW Not a glasses wearer but after an eye operation I have 20/20 in right eye and about 20/10 in left for better reading. This throws things off a bit I sort of depend more on the right eye than the left obviously.

As an 'eye candy" man I couldn't play without shadows ...it would be too much like the old Il-2 original.
