Game update to dual game copies

I have a copy of IL-2 GB for VR and one for non-VR.  They are on separate drives.  My thought is others may have a similar setup in order to have separate game settings for each.  I am wondering how others handle game updates.  Can each game copy be updated to a new version separately through the use of each Launcher without affecting the other copy's settings or is it better to update one game copy and manually copy specific files to the other?

I used to have two (site) versions/instances (same drive) which I updated individually without issues. 

 

This was a few patches ago but I doubt that this particular case has changed
