cardboard_killer Posted November 6, 2019 Posted November 6, 2019 (edited) 5-Nov-1939 "A plot to arrest or even kill Adolf Hitler, hatched by of his most senior military staff, collapsed. Led by General Franz Halder, the architect of the invasion of Poland, many Generals were appalled by Hitler's plans to continue the conflict by invading Belgium and the Netherlands and feared that the adventure would founder in another Great War quagmire. Walther von Brauchitsch, who met with Hitler and was supposed to be the one to issue the order for his arrest, got cold feet and lost the opportunity to prevent Hitler from plunging Europe into another World War. However one of the conspirators, Colonel Hans Oster of German Military Intelligence, tipped off the Dutch and Belgians about Hitler's invasion intentions. Heliopause Posted November 6, 2019 Posted November 6, 2019 1. He didn't tip off the Belgians. But the info did pass on to them. 2. And why did he tell the Dutch? To who'm was his allegiance?

To what he believed was Germany and not the Nazi party. The conspirators for all the military plots against Hitler were mainly concerned that Germany would be defeated and then scrubbed off the map, as many in the Allied forces wanted. When Germany defeated France, the conspirators generally gave up any plans to remove Hitler, because they no longer feared losing the war. Once that fear returned, the anti-Hitler movement in the army became viable again. Of course, by then Halder and Brauchitsch were gone from the table. One thing Hitler did was to pay generals huge sums of money during the war. Manstein, after his retirement, bought a huge estate in Prussia, despite his falling out with Hitler on operations. The estate was then overrun by the advancing Russian army. Edited November 6, 2019 by cardboard_killer

It's all well and good to get paid the big dollars to invade other countries for der Fuhrer, but always remember: all those Deutschmarks can't save you from the Red Army!
