cardboard_killer Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 Early in 1939, the Chinese captured intact a Nakajima Ki-27 “Nate” fighter. They turned it over to American advisor Claire Chennault who flies it in extensive evaluation tests. He is worried by the fighter, stating that it climbs like a rocket and maneuvers like a squirrel. Today, he departs China for the United States, accompanying Chiang Kai-shek’s brother in law and financier Soong Tse-ven (often known as T. V. Soong) to secure aid for China, especially for the Air Force. During the trip he provides a dossier on the Ki-27’s capabilities to the War Department, with a recommendation to not try and dogfight or turn with it, as the Chinese have learned. Chennault will later receive a letter stating that the dossier was turned over to “aeronautical experts” who determined that it was impossible to build an airplane with the specifications Chennault claimed.
