Study finds violent video games don't make players aggressive, non-mastery of the games do

psychotic violent people are attracted to games that center all around torturing and murdering people.

Closely following the development of upcoming video games can also cause heightened aggressiveness and bursts of psychotic rage. ;)

Cue, "Downfall" parody with some reference to it taking something like two weeks, although everybody is quite sure, if a little hazy, that there was some vague suggestion made a fortnight ago to much the same effect.

Games do make people more sociopathic though. Games do promote a warped substitute for human interaction.

Games like Call of Duty are promoting a distorted view of war and glamorizing the killings. Games are good way to pass your anger, making you less prone to do it in real life. It doesn't mean that it makes you a better person however. The resulting conception of the world for people indoctrinated is a xenophobic polarized view of the world where it's us against them. Call of Duty should be adult entertainment unfortunately it is not.

I find it most disturbing that kids do know the name of every rifle and weapon (without knowing their proper use of course) but do not know the names of great persons. People act all offended when they read about german kids during the third reich who played with their wehrmacht toys and were told glorified soldier/aces stories. Look at the world now and tell me how is it different?

War is far from being thrilling or great. If you think that being an ace was great and that you dominated the skies and lived heroic stories, think again. Most of those guys were killed at some point (died often horrible deaths), those guys lived in bad conditions often, they saw all their friends die and they often were crippled and traumatized (look at Steinhoff's face).

So, this study shows that frustrating mechanics do encourage violence. Even an old VCR did it when someone tried to program it. I do tend to get aggressive with any kind of convoluted software or equipment badly thought... so it ain't any surprise.

Next thing is that they blame virtual reality (rift) and how real everything looks. Just waiting for media to bash it because some crazy guy killed himself while playing.. Same thing was with TV and will be with next new entertainment thing.

My nephew actually through out a game that his friend gave him it was so bloody and violent. I think they're all trying to train us to kill each other off, who I don't know exactly

I've been playing violent video games and listening to heavy metal for almost 30 years now, and I have never killed anyone, worshiped the devil, or thought for a moment that what is acceptable in a game is okay in reality. Keep in mind, this was when most games were fairly challenging, and we didn't have wikipedia walkthroughs to reference, you had to adapt and actually get better to proceed in many cases. Frustration was just part of the experience, very few of us became serial killers because we couldn't find the last warp whistle.

The difference between games and movies is the involvement. There are psychological problems linked to gaming abuse but they're not clear cut like "games do make people violent".

Some people are really addicted to this media, a thing which movies never did to anyone.

This issue would be solved if parents were more responsible. However I am appalled by the numbers of kids playing grand theft auto. What also baffles me is that the same parents would be totally against them watching a porno, yet both are equally toxic to kids.

By the way I am pretty addicted to violence here and never did hurt anyone. I have played countless games and sometimes I get pretty hooked up on a title. However I won't deny that there are issues with some people, especially kids.

I'm pretty sure that you heard of "The Catcher in the Rye"? Mark Chapman was obsessed with it and apparently read that back to back before killing John Lennon.

I wonder whether it's the fact that mental disability and sociopathy are not diagnosed and treated in the appropriate form.

And as a person who experienced an FPS and real life shooting, I can assure you that there is quite a substantial difference and feedback: few things get your adrenaline rushing like shooting a whole clip of Garand in real life.
