Mukai Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 Hey guys, So i was a bit curious if VR makes you fly a certain way or fly a certain role like ground pounding, fighter or bomber etc? I find it kind of difficult to spot and ID targets (and even more difficult to maintain contact in a rolling dogfight) so I tend to go for ground pounders or bombers currently which may not have been my first choice in 2d originally but If i'm being honest with myself, I was a terrible dogfighter anyway haha. What do you guys fly in VR?
Talon_ Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 You get used to spotting and ID in time. I'm 12th overall on Combat Box this month and focus primarily on fighter work.

If I'm online (haven't in a long while) I'm unfortunately lone wolfing it as I don't have much time to commit to flying these days ?

Flying with a wingman is anyways good practice regardless of screen setup, but I don't do too badly without. Regardless, we all fly in VR. Here's a solo sortie:
Goffik Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 I fly fighters exclusively because I find bombing and strafing boring. Spotting and ID'ing is a bit of a challenge sometimes but not an insurmountable one, and you do get used to it. As for orientation in a dogfight, I find that far and away easier in VR than I ever did in 2D because if feels so natural.
dburne Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 I fly single player only, all fighters usually in either PWCG Campaign or IL-2 Career. Always have a blast with it. Currently fly the Spit V and IX, will be having a go with the P-51 when Bodenplatte gets to full release.
Ghostrider147 Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 I recently got into VR and the spotting is not too much of a problem in my opinion, really just like on the monitor, you need to be alert and scan your surroundings. Takes some time to get used to I guess. As for dogfights, try to stay focused on following the enemy aircraft and not so much on flying the aircraft. This may sound weird, but if you got some sim experience, just keep your eyes on the enemy plane and subconsciously you'll fly your plane towards this one enemy. At least, that works for me, I find that following enemy aircraft in VR feels very natural as you're much more immersed and the depth perception is great. I once heard someone say that you should focus on keeping the sights on the target when firing at a target with a gun, don't focus on controlling the recoil: that will happen by itself if you keep the target in your sights. I think that kinda applies here too
Lusekofte Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 I fly bombers and fighter bombers. Mostly because flying fighter alone is boring as f*** I die a lot if low. Looking for targets and watch your six is a 70/30 against seeing a stalker. I recommend you to try to find some flying mates with comms in servers you visit. Fly with them and not alone if you got time. 1
40plus Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 Dying. Dying is my play style. I need allot more practice. 1 2 1
TCW_Brzi_Joe Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 I am not good in dogfights, but I learn to abuse situation. Like if I see 2 planes fighting, that is invitation for me to join (2 vs 1 is excellent ratio). If there are more enemies, I go high and fast, watch my six constantly, and actually never go lower to fight impossible. I call for help and wait. And I just pretend to be dangerous above their heads.
HBB*Hunger Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 I fly COOP only. And there at least in a Schwarm.
IRRE_Axurit Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 Hello If you fly in VR you must know this mod. It will allow you to recognize your targets more easily. It works in MP without checking MOD autaurized. Good flight ! 1 1

Got this, wasn't sure it was MP compatible, good to hear Just need to sort out the convergence of the zoom levels, its giving me a major headache atm
=EXPEND=Tripwire Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 I fly fighters, and do well enough. You just have to expect to be bounced more often than our owl neck friends that aren't goggle jockeys like us, as checking 6 is hard work and you get lazy and don't do it as often as you should. Since the last big update though, spotting has become immensely more difficult. (It was already hard in VR).
TheWarsimmer Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 My play style is to take the time to fly to a decent altitude for what I think would be good for BnZ. Once I'm there, I slowly circle for a bit, until I get bounced and fall 15,000 ft to my death. It's a pretty solid strategy that works 80% of the time. 5 1

BornToBattle Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 Single player only, career mode. Chomping at the bit for the new careers with the new maps/plane sets. Would love to get back into a career in WW1 once again but this time in VR! 1

Original Vive here, modified with GearVR lenses (best upgrade ever) Spotting is OK, ID'ing is near on impossible for me unless I'm already stuck up in his tailpipe. That being said, even on servers with tags enabled I get my arse handed to me over and over again. More so I think because I can't hide. For me, it's not the tech, it's the pilot ?

I know just about every way to die possible in airwar. two days ago I burned to death in my Tempest. Flames came underneath the instrument panel pretty cool effect but it remind you of the faith of many
69th_Bazzer Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 I fly fighter, fighter-bomber and bomber, only in MP. Mostly bomber/ground attack since I got VR in February, but since the latest batch of planes, more fighter. Personally, I find the depth perception in VR provides a significant advantage in ground attack over 2D. My hit rate on difficult targets like moving tanks went way up when I switched, and my tree strike rate went way down (although still quite high). Against that, I definitely get bounced more in VR as it's harder to check 6 vs. 2D w/TrackIR. I also have a harder time tracking opponents (or my wingman) in rolling dogfights, or reacquiring targets in a boom-and-zoom if I miss my first pass. However, with 3dmigoto, I actually find acquiring targets and ID'ing in VR easier than in 2D. With those considerations in mind, best I can do is stay high (12-18k in a Tempest is my preference since most of the fighting is down low), scan in 5x zoom with 3dmigoto until I find prey, come in super fast, and hope I get it right the first time.
Jade_Monkey Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 No changes at all. It is harder to check six but still typically go on an attack plane and become a fighter after dropping ordinance. Tempest is a perfect example of a plane that can do both very well. 1
PatrickAWlson Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 The difference between VR and non VR is the 1:1 feeling of head movement to view. I find that I roll my plane a lot more to keep visual on my target. Other than that it doesn't really affect my play style. Shoot. Miss. Get closer. Shoot. Miss again. Get closer ... oops 2 1

I get killed more often since switching from track ir as I find it very hard looking all round whilst trying to do combat maneuvers. the mod mentioned is also a must for me as I cant id contacts without it. I love the immersion so don't mind not being as competitive.
