Custom skins coming & going

I made some personalised Tempest skins for my squad and quite often we see them vanish then reappear a few seconds later.  It is not just something happening when we first spawn though that is usually when we first see it it.  You can watch your squadmates skin appear then look away and look back and it has gone again only to reappear after a few seconds.   It also happens when flying.

 

Anyone else seeing this ?  I only started seeing it after the tempest update though I make skins for every new Allied plane we fly.  It did not happen when the P47 came out or any before that.   I tried turning off 'Use 4k SKins' but that does not help.   Has something changed in the way they handle custom skins now or is it just a side effect of the bigger demands BoBp makes on our PCs?

I see it alot as well. Skins render out after a certain distance and if you look away, just how it is currently. I would like to see skins from farther distances though.

This is not only true for custom skins, I have also seen this with official skins. Sometimes they stay, sometimes they pop off and on again.
Also the buildings (with high render distance) pop up only when I look at them and are rendered. I have the feeling that these two things are connected.

It's a result of too many airplanes being in the area / field of view at one time. This is present in rise of flight as well. I don't know what the limit in Il-2 is but in ROF it was 5 airplanes before the skins start swapping around between the chosen skin and a default one. I don't know why they don't just replace the default skin completely with the chosen one. Probably has something to do with memory optimisation due to the size of the .dds skin files.

I seldom change skins for this very reason. 
It is very annoying. If one use the suggested official skin this do not happen.

I have this too, skins other than default loading when looking away and then looking back, it didn't used to happen but I notice it a lot now!

It happens even with the official ones. The only exception is the default skin. All other official and custom skins have this problem.

First off, please see this as an observation, not a criticism.  The Rhineland map has shown us that we are at the outside of the envelope of what the current game engine is capable of doing.  I gave up using it when generating missions using SYN_Vander's mission generator.  Kuban works just fine, while Rhineland is a laggy, rubber banding crash fest.  Asking for more details, features, and advanced AI behaviors is putting the cart before the horse.

 

A new engine is going to be needed to take the Sim we all love to the next level.

Jason has talked about this before.  I hope the current version is monetarily successful enough to allow the team to do just that.

Oddly I don't get that.  My system is barely up to the minimum standard with just a GeForce 1050 card and I run most settings at High without seeing rubber banding or lag in the Rhineland map. No crashes at all either  I do see FPS drop below 60 sometimes and I have issues with spotting but that seems to apply to people with much better systems and across all maps.

I am about to try overclocking slightly to see if I can keep the 60FPS under all loads. Many people are saying it is the overclocking that is causing crashes so I will see what happens.

You are not hosting I imagine.

I just hosted for 3 hours of various coop missions on the Kuban map, no issues, the most I was able to go on Rhineland is a bit over half an hour.  GTX 980,  I7 5820K, 16 gigs of DDR4 ram.

 

I wish I could explain it.

There’s skins, but then there’s the shine of aircraft that disappears too.... 

like a p47. Polished aluminium... when close it is beautiful then as it gets to about 400m or so it pops into a flat grey...

 

yes change of engine needed... but does that mean a whole new game or rewrite of exsisting???
