Where to start

Hello,

I come to this genre of games through Rise of Flight. A year ago, I was misled by a sales person and bought a laptop inappropriate for gaming (really, I didn't so my due diligence). Anyway, I am set now, and I would love to take advantage of the sale, but I do not know which one of the three to buy; BOM, BOS or BOK?

I'll look forward to the advice.

Thank you.

How comfortable are you flying? At this point I'm thinking the Battle of Stalingrad Premium Edition is probably the best on-ramp for someone who is new to flight sims, because it includes the La-5. Most of the La-5 and Yaks are forgiving fighters.

With the Ash-86F engine it gets unlimited boost, which should keep it competitive with the late war fighters.

Other option, if you know you're going to be playing for a long time is to get all three. We probably won't be seeing this kind of sale for some time.

typical answer: get BoS, it has Yak1, LaGG3, bf109 F4 and G2. Plus stuka and a Il2, you get everything and balanced, all beautiful planes to flight and to start trying the sim. If you like it, trust me, you will end up buying all of them without the need of someone telling you to get them all, so start trying BoS if you want a bit of everything

You just buy BoS, get online, get your butt whipped a million times, and see if the occasional success is something that draws you in enough to spend the time to get good at.

Honestly.... all premium main titles are $20 each.... $60 before tax... you’re getting three planesets for the price of one...

im a sim junky and play at least 4-5 hours daily... play more when I can...

if you like to fly a lot... it’s a good deal

Thanks for the advice. It looks like i will purchase BOS for sure. I have already spent 20 on two DLCs for Hearts of Iron IV (see a pattern here, LOL), so this will be 40 USD to explain the wife if you get my meaning.

Not so much conceptual or fundamental difference if you will between the three titles. Each of them covers own time frame and battle on the Eastern front and therefore features corresponding maps and planesets, and is more than worth the money, not to speak now with these discounts.

To have the most modern stuff before BoBp, go for BoK (features Fw 190 A-5, P-39, Yak-7B among others as fighters, A-20 as bomber...). BoS gives you a tad older machines, but the most diverse and balanced set IMO (109 F4, G2, Yak-1 - all excellent dogfighters). Me loving an early war stuff, I'd personally go for BoM in your shoes (to get hands on I-16, 109 E-4, early IL-2), but that's just me.

So, ultimately it's entirely up to your preferences, simply thoroughly review the stuff you get with each title.

Oh, and consider buying yourself a collector plane or two (if you don't buy premium editions of titles), they come really cheap these days.

If you want to fly online then BoS is your best choice as it is more likely to have something you can fly in every server.  There may be some servers sticking to strictly early war aircraft for a week or two so you have to fly somewhere else but then they will start allowing some of the earlier BoS aircraft to join in.  You will then probably be OK all the way through even when they change to Kuban (though you may not be very competitive in a fighter there)   Normally I would suggest someone with BoS could increase their chances of being able to fly by getting collectibles, eg P40 for the BoM servers and Yak-1b for Kuban servers,  but with the Premium editions of the full games not costing much more than a single collectable aircraft for the next few weeks then there is little point.

If you did buy all three premium Editions and still wondered about getting a collector plane then my advice for the Allied aircraft would be that that the Yak-1b is an extremely good fighter but the Yak-7b you already have from Kuban has almost identical performance so the La5FN is a better choice.  It is one of the few (pre-Bodenplatte) aircraft that scares the Axis pilots as long as you fly it the right way i.e. fast with rolling maneuvers like a Fw190.  If you want to turnfight then go for the Spit Vb.

I would sugest you to buy BOK

Bok has ( to in my opinion ) THE best map in the great battles series   and you get some awesome planes like bf 110g2 , fw 190 A5 and A 20

If you like Steam, go on and buy Battle of Stalingrad through Steam, then all other titles like BoM and BoK and Collector planes through IL2 shop.  You can easily link your Steam account with IL2 account so all content will be in one place.

Get them all. You won’t be sorry, for 60 bucks. keep in mind you will want to get a hands on throttle and stick (HOTAS) controller too, and maybe rudders.

The amount of stuff, historical stuff from primary sources and old military films, that you can learn to get better is substantial enough you’ll be hooked for a while.

Go at your own pace and have fun, don’t feel pressure to jump online right away.

theres many ways to be rewarded by this “game” (hobby, really).

I have played Rise of Flight and loved the game, so I know I will love the game and I won't regret buying all of them. That being said, I have a wife and 13 month, so paying 60 for all three while a great deal, may not be wise when explaining to my wife. LOL As I mentioned, I have just spent 20 bought 20 dollars worth of DLCs for hearts of iron, so I have already spend 40. If I were to spend "60" then my next best choice seems to be BOK based on what I am reading.

BTW, I intend to rep everyone but for some reason I a restricted on how many I can give per day for some reason.

If you only get one get BoS, if you get two get BoK and BoM

All three are worth having imo

I bought them in the order BOS > BOM > BOK.  BOS has a good planeset and career mode to start with, and the yak1 and 109G2 are some of the easiest planes to fly, manage and shoot down enemy with.  I sort of wish I'd bought BOK earlier though as it has some interesting planes, like the spit and hs129.  BOM has the p40 but it is tricky to fly due because of its engine management, and beside that you have the slow but maneuverable I16, the somewhat outclassed mig3, and the rest of the planes are representing in other versions in BOK or BOS.

Overall though I'd suggest picking the one which has a plane you're most interested in.

Welcome to the forums!

Battle of Stalingrad is an excellent starting point but I'd also echo some of the others pushing for Battle of Kuban. With the pricing available it's pretty darn good for any of the three and you have to start somewhere and maybe throw a few more dollars at it during the next sale if money and time are tight.

While I love the aircraft sets for all of the games, Battle of Kuban is kind of special thanks to the superb map which I believe still holds as being the most scenic map in the series with the Caucasus mountains in the east and the Black Sea and rolling hills and flat lands of the west and north.

If you already have IL-2 installed, nothing new needs to be downloaded. It's already all there :)

Thanks,... I logged on and figured it out when I saw the stuff already there. ?
