Sublime Posted October 11, 2019 Posted October 11, 2019 Besides obvious examples my question is why? P38 is an excellent exampme. Its either or. The thing can carry so many bombs it seeems likee someone woulda figured our a way to install rockets on it? The p47 can..? Im asking just to generate discussion and hopefully find some backround out about this.
PatrickAWlson Posted October 11, 2019 Posted October 11, 2019 Wiring? You would need separate triggers wired if you carried both bombs and rockets at the same time.

In general, if the planes carried the ground ordnance at some point in the timeframe we 're playing in, they carry it in-game. In some cases we get some pretty rare ground attack configurations. For example, the Tempest could carry bombs but mostly didn't. Most of the time Spitfires were never equipped with rockets, but a couple sqaudrons had the ability and so we have the possible mod. It looks like the later P-38L variant was updated to carry HVAR rockets, but we have the P-38J. So its likely that they just didn't bother retrofitting the J variant when they had the L using rockets. Similarly, the Typhoon had the ability to carry bombs or rockets, but in practice squadrons tended to specialize with one piece of ordnance or the other.
=RvE=Windmills Posted October 11, 2019 Posted October 11, 2019 You can combine only certain bombs and rockets. For instance P51 can only take rockets when it has 500lbs loaded, but not with 1000lbs bombs. P38 cannot carry rockets with all types of bombs either, of the top of my head I don't know what the combos are that are/aren't allowed. You have to try and see whats allowed. This should all be historical restrictions.
-SF-Disarray Posted October 11, 2019 Posted October 11, 2019 Wiring could be the issue, though with enough work that could be overcome. I think the issue is more structural. In order to lift something heavy like a bomb you need a good solid mounting point. It would also have to be close enough to the wing root so as not to break or bend the wing and with most of these wings not being designed with hard-points in mind there are going to be limited options. In other cases, such as the P-38, it is a matter of space. With the 6 bomb load out there wouldn't be room for the rockets because the inside bombs are in the way of the rocket tubes. In the case of the 2000 lb bombs, the reason is the same, the bombs are just too big to accommodate the rocket tubes.

You can take a full bomb load AND 6 rockets, which was historically possible but used only rarely as it makes taking off a real pain.
=362nd_FS=RoflSeal Posted October 11, 2019 Posted October 11, 2019 I think all 3 US fighters can carry some form of bombs and rockets. The P-51 and P-38 can't carry rockets with the heavier bombloadouts probably because it would make them too unsafe to take off with.
