Hello all,

I've decided to get into VR, mainly for IL-2 Great Battles. Is there any good VR headsets you guys recommend? I've heard positive things about the Oculus Rift S but I'd like to hear your opinions.

Also, what GPU's do you use for VR? I'm planning on getting something like an RTX 2070 (Super) to get the job done, is that suitable?

Thanks in advance :salute:

If you can give us more info about your rig and if you have a budget in mind, folks will be able to give you more useful advice :)

Cheers

Thanks for your answer Dave,

my combined budget for the VR headset and a new GPU is around 1000-1100 euros

My current rig has a Ryzen 5 2600 CPU with 16 GB DDR4 RAM (2400 MHz) and a GTX 1060 6GB

I figured the 1060 6GB isn't going to hold up to VR for IL-2 Great Battles, so I took that into account for the budget

I'm not familiar with the Ryzen 5 CPU, so others may be able to give better advice than I can.

I can, however recommend the Rift S as a very capable VR headset at a good price, giving sharp detailed visuals in IL-2. All instrument and panel text is clearly readable at normal pilot seating position.

I get good frame rates with my rig (details below), so you have some comparison there.

I'll second RiftS. I use a Ryzen 2700x and 1070ti, 16gb 3000mhz DDR4 ram and achieve an experience that i'm more than happy with. Prior to the RiftS i was using a CV1 and the RiftS is a noticable improvement in clarity. Would love to try the Index, but having cash flow issues at the moment.?

If i was in your position? i'd go for the RiftS and 2070 super or a 5700xt.

I've heard good things of the Odyssey+ and HP Reverb (for screen resolution).

I use a CV1 and it is decent, but screen res is definitely an issue.

Most reports put the Rift S a little ahead of the Odyssey + in image clarity.

Reverb probably the best.

I have the Rift S and running a Ryzen 5 2600 also, but with a RX 580.

Oculus games look great.

I'm having trouble optimizing this game though. Cockpit looks great, but enemy contacts are blurry unless directly on their six. I was wondering if a 2070 super would help me with my problems with the game being blurry. I've only tried VR post patch.

I am experiencing the very same issue. When flying fighters I usually spot contacts only if they are on my six already, shooting someone else due to tracers or at max 2km distance. Everything else is so small I can't see it even with VR Zoom on. If someone is in/on clouds it nigh impossible to identify him.

If someone got some tips to improve this I'd be really grateful. ATM I am running the game on medium settings - in the air everything is fine, on the ground I now and then experience lag spikes in MP. I am using OpenComposite, that boosted my fps quite a bit and turning off oculus home in the new beta software gave me a huge increase in steadiness as well.

Specs:

CPU: i7-7700k(non-oc)

RAM: 16 GB DDR4 3200mhz

GPU: EVGA GTX980 SC (thinking about upgrading to a 2070Super)

WMD: Rift S

Best regards.

Alex

I’ve recently got a Valve Index with just one lighthouse which reduces the cost quite a bit and from my few days experience with it suggest having a look at that as an option. With such a short ownership time I can’t of course claim any expertise, just first impressions. The Rift S would also be a good choice from what I have heard but I haven’t tried one. I have just a GTX 2070 and am getting very pleasing results. Valve have a free app you can run to check the specs of your rig prior to deciding.

Redkite’s excellent video about the Valve Index was very helpful for me.

I read reverb demands more of your hardware compared to Rift S in DCS. I do not know if that is the case in GB.
with a 2070 super Ruft S will run well. And cost about little over half of a reverb.
I use Rift S and find it above adequate to excellent depending on how you look at it.
I only used Rift before so I cant compare.
