lurch9494 Posted September 26, 2019 Posted September 26, 2019 (edited) Hi I am currently a Rift CV1 user and have recently upgraded from a i5 6600k to an i9 9900k on water (ROG Maximus xi Hero mobo) running @ 5Ghz on all cores with 16GB 3200MHz DDR4 Ram etc. I currently use a GTX 1080 gpu, but it is fairly under used (usually around 40-60% gpu usage in game VR). I have enough left in my budget to either go GTX 2080ti or go for the new Valve Index VR setup, but sadly not both! ? What would give me the best result a new GPU or Headset??? Opinions please guys as I am struggling to decide... The real aim is to improve visual quality but at these prices, I want to get it right!! This PC build is almost exclusively for IL2 and although I play other games, they are secondary, so performance in IL2 is the main point of the upgrade Edited September 26, 2019 by lurch9494 speeeling mishtake :)
jarg1 Posted September 26, 2019 Posted September 26, 2019 My first thought is it doesn't make sense to upgrade your GPU if you aren't upgrading the headset unless you have a need for better frame rates on your monitor. Perhaps you should wait until you can afford both. With the GTX 2080Ti and your CPU you would be able to run any current headset. 1

Thanks for the reply :) I am leaning toward getting the Index over the 2080ti as I still think even the i9 9900k is the bottleneck rather than the 1080... I would happily reduce the settings a little (They are pretty high atm using the CV1) for the extra FOV and crisper visuals. I wish I could just go buy both, but like a lot of people, its better to do it in bite size lumps lol
chiliwili69 Posted September 26, 2019 Posted September 26, 2019 I think I would pick in the Index in your case. You have a powerfull CPU and your 1080 will be underutilized most of the time with the Index (assuming you don´t put a very high SteamVR SS value, something like 130% would give you nice visual and performance). The Index is clearly a big upgrade over the Rift. Also, if you only want the Index for IL-2, you don´t need to acquire controller or two basestations. With one basestation it works quite OK for IL-2. 1

Thank you! I was pretty much going this way, but just wanted to make sure the 1080 would be adequate for the Index I will probably go for the full set (£919 GBP) with controllers and 2 base stations as I do like to use VR for other games, but IL2 is the critical one

OK bit the bullet and went for the full Valve Index kit with 2x base stations and the controllers etc I'm excited to see how much of an improvement over the CV1 it will be 2
