Morning,

I was curious about this and couldn't find an answer: do you think it is easier for a video card to get more FPS or more resolution? Or is it equal?

For example, would it be easier for my 1060 to take advantage of a 1440p monitor or a 144mhz monitor?

Thanks.

Since 144hz is just how often it's refreshing the image versus going to a larger resolution, A 1080 monitor with 144hz is going to run better with your card compared to a 144hz 1440 monitor

Howdy,

Thanks for that, but I should have been more specific though. I meant is it easier for a card now running a 1080p 60hz monitor to go to a 1080p 144hz monitor, or a 1440p 60hz monitor.

I was just curious if a card can do one or the other (hz vs. res) easier of if it's all the same.

It would be better to up the refresh rate as that won't take much computing power, running a higher resolution is always going to be harder for your card.

Ahh, that was the question.

I haven't seen any info on that anywhere. It came to mind yesterday when watching some video card reviews.

You might find this helpful. (Summary, no, but they use a lot of other resources).  https://www.quora.com/Do-high-frame-rates-144fps-use-more-VRAM-than-60-fps

I expect that a 1080 can gobble up both these settings without too much difficulty. Mine is on a 60 hz 4k TV, and gives me steady 60 fps in the air on Ultra settings, except near or on the ground when it gets to about 45.  Personally I think what is more important is what you want from the game: ultra responsiveness for competitive MP, or the full look of the artwork.

Artwork. I love me some eye candy.

But I'm not sure I can afford a new monitor and a video card. That's what got me to thinking about this question.

Earlier in the year I found myself contemplating a similar question.   The answer I came up with was an ebay Rift.:)

If you enjoy falling off a normal office chair in the comfort of your own home then I can't recommend VR highly enough.:salute:

It's a rather complicated and nonlinear relationship as resources on your card are utilized differently. With high frame rates, you also need to start considering CPU performance.

Higher refresh rates never hurt, as you will still get smoother results than on a 60 Hz monitor even if your graphics card cannot keep up with the full 144 Hz. The same cannot be said about increasing resolution.

With a 1060 3 GB, I'd hesitate switching to 1440p. While Il-2 will certainly be playable with some settings tweaks, it won't be the best experience. On the somewhat stronger GTX 980 that I used, frame rates would drop well below 60 in certain situations, particularly on the ground. Many other modern games would perform quite poorly at higher settings. Admittedly, I do value smoothness over image quality, so your experience may vary.

If I were you, I'd probably save the money and wait it out until the next upgrade cycle. The 1060 3 GB is a very solid 1080p card, but it doesn't do too well above that. With a newer GPU, 1440@144 or 4K@60 will be quite easily attainable.
