HP Reverb Supersampling 100%vs188%vs300% (through the lens pictures)

The HP Reverb is the first device that at default resolution (ie SS 100%) the number of rendered pixels (5 Million) are less than the display pixels (9.3 Million).

I don´t know exactly why HP decided to do that, but it is what it is. I think that in the new software version these numbers will change and the SS% will correspond to another number, so I write down here the table of the resolution shown in SteamVR/Settings/Video section at the present day:

resolution.png.f50781c08c9903cbdb90248da1aca532.png

Then I took some pictures of the same recorded tracks that I was using in the comparison Index.Vs.Reverb which is in this thread.

I used the same Reverb pictures already captured with 188% and took new ones for SS=100% and SS=300%.

I did that just to easily compare the visual gain when the SS% is increased.

The best way to compare the effect is to download the cropped pictures from the below link and compare them one after the other with you image viewer:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=155KT3HWTl5zQpmR4Nv1MlyWRL5H0HZy6

The images inserted below are at lower resolution that the native crops (I don´t know why but now it is not possible to place images with more than 750 pixels vertically, is this a new limitation in the forum??)

More for the Heinkel:

As you can see the visual detail gain from 100% to 188% is  very noticeable, this is fully aligned with previous SS tests performed with the Rift CV1 some years ago and shown in this thread.

But the surprising thing is that the images with SS=300% are not better than the images at 188%, in fact they are a little bit more blurred. Very subtle.

Perhaps in these high resolution panels, going beyond 188% would not produce the same effect than in the CV1 Rift??

And the ship (curious thing is that the ropes and cables are thiner but more defined):

Interesting.

I run it at what would be close to your SS 300% (though in my SteamVR it is at SS 140%).

I will test the visuals tonight.

I'll check again later today, but I don't think my resolution is the same as what you have at 100%.  When I checked mid-July I showed 2512x2456 per eye.  I am running the beta.

From the images you posted, it certainly looks like 188% is the best (especially given the performance reduction going to 300%).

This is what I have.  Image quality is excellent.  Not sure why you get a different resolution at 100% than I do.

Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR beta fixes the scaler in SteamVR. That is why it is different, assuming you are running the beta of course!

188% looks amazing!

Tip I just find out.

Turning HDR off makes the colors look much better and image even crispier, that, plus gamma 0.7 looks pretty good, no more washed out colors.

I agree with HDR being turned off is better, my gamma is still at 0.8 (too lazy to go into the config file?)

I seemed to actually get a sharper image at 300% than Chili's picture.  Compared 300% SS to my 27" 1080p and the max speed numbers in the Spit from the default cockpit position looked just about the same (Chili - I assume that's what were seeing in your photo, default cockpit position with no lean in or zoom).   Of course I'm getting only 35 fps (22 msec frame time) just sitting on the airfield with my 1080, may need to get something better.

I do notice when fpsVR is on it sets the SS and not the steamVR setting, that confused me for awhile.

I am using the beta and I would recommend it.  Have had absolutely no issues with it.

I run the SteamVR beta, and the "WMR for SteamVR" non-beta, so I have these resolution:

reverb-188.thumb.jpg.2e9e42fd88b8876094da523700f66b69.jpg

Based in the new resolutions provided by jarg1, i made a table to cmpare the new resolutions of "WMR for SteamVR" beta with the non beta.

the 100% in the beta is equivalent to 244% in the non-beta.

And the 188% of the non-beta is equivalent to 76% in the beta.

Now my doubt is, what it look better 188% in non-beta or 100% in beta?

All pictures were taken at default position (no lean)

Well, there is one thing I didn´t say about it, the maximum speeds plate looked better (either 188% or 300%) with the REverb than with the pictures, and the letters are more "readable" in the headset.

I have non beta and at 188%, runs smooth and looks amazing with HDR off.

Does WMR beta gives any advantage? performance? quality?

I disabled HDR and agree the colors are noticeably improved.

Please remember that without HDR on, aircrafts don't blink with reflection from the sun. Keeping it on may make it easier to spot aircrafts on the ground.

Thanks Fenris, but very small price to pay I think, and the resolution is so much better spotting is much better than before than when I had the O+
