IIMaydayII Posted September 5, 2019 Posted September 5, 2019 First time making a video and wanted to get some feedback on it. This is the first mission on Jagermeister’s Achtung Jabos! Campaign. 3
Raptorattacker Posted September 5, 2019 Posted September 5, 2019 Beautifully shot video. Feedback? Well, to be honest it could've been probably half as long, possibly less. Don't underestimate how long certain sections can seem to the watcher. Most specifically the journey to and from the airbase for instance. All you really need is the suggestion that you have set off>cut>arrival at target and action at that end>set off back>cut>arrival back at base. D'you see what I mean? I'm not criticising, by any means but the power of suggestion of events is a vastly underestimated thing because the watcher unconsciously KNOWS the bits in-between so you don't really need to show them in detail. If nothing else it helps YOU out with editing/rendering/uploading as well!! I hope this helps a little? I look forward to the next installment! Rap 1
IIMaydayII Posted September 5, 2019 Author Posted September 5, 2019 Thanks! I was thinking I should cut it down some. I didn’t know what to expect on this first try at editing but I greatly appreciate the feedback!! I just want to learn and put out good quality videos for all to enjoy! Mayday
Raptorattacker Posted September 5, 2019 Posted September 5, 2019 Good stuff. Like I say, the footage is brilliant so you've no problem there. As far as the editing/cutting goes I guess the best approach is 'less is more' if you know what I mean! 1
56RAF_Roblex Posted September 6, 2019 Posted September 6, 2019 (edited) To be honest, I looked at the length of the video and watched the first 60 seconds then decided not to bother with the rest as I assumed you had no edited anything out. I have watched it all now. I am not an expert at making videos so the following is from the perspective of a viewer :- By all means show the engine starting and even a bit of taxiing and take-off and wheels-up as that adds some atmosphere but then, unless something happens eg some unexpected flack, just skip to approaching the target and the attack itself. After that show you turning for home and forming up then skip to approaching home and landing. I would take out the first 50 seconds (waiting for engine to start), everything between 6m & 12m (cruising to target area) then everything between 16 & 26 (cruising home). That gives you Engine start & taxi out (possibly lose some of the waiting for final two fighters to taxi out), Take-off and a bit of cruising above cloud, descent through the cloud and the attack then re-forming to go home then descending through cloud & landing. In my video from this wonderful campaign I spent longer on the attack as I ignored what the others were doing and made a couple of individual attacks but that meant they left without me so I also showed more of the flight home to illustrate my fumbling attempts to navigate without a leader to follow ? IIMaydayII Posted September 6, 2019 Author Posted September 6, 2019 I appreciate your response and perspective. I’m already doing a little more “planning” to my editing based on the input raptor and yourself has given me. Thanks Mayday
Raptorattacker Posted September 6, 2019 Posted September 6, 2019 Hey Mayday, it often helps to just do a quick 'storyboard'. Generally a film/video runs like this: 1 Intro 2 Build up 3 Action/Main bit of story 4 Wind-Down 5 Epilogue/'Moral' Check it out in most films. This is the rough running order. One thing I DID notice was #3 doing exactly THIS on your video as well, just that you weren't in his 'line of fire'!! 1
IIMaydayII Posted September 6, 2019 Author Posted September 6, 2019 Thanks Raptor. I’m definitely gonna take this and use it as an outline now. Mayday 1
IIMaydayII Posted September 9, 2019 Author Posted September 9, 2019 Mission #2 I think this video is much better! You guys tell me what you think! Mission - My flight of Jugs going back to the front lines to bomb the advancing German ground forces advancing under the cover of bad weather. Overcast is dangerously low and makes for risky bombing. Raptorattacker Posted September 9, 2019 Posted September 9, 2019 LOADS better! All I would say now is get your head around all the camera shortcuts in replay. It'll add LOADS more dynamism to the scenes. Just get a bit of replay and mess around woth the same bit but use loads of different cameras. They're especially good in combat clips and can make them look many times more action-packed and hectic. There's a list of 'em in settings and they really are well worth it. You'll be doing a Spielberg before y'know it!! 1
IIMaydayII Posted September 9, 2019 Author Posted September 9, 2019 Thanks Raptor, I really do appreciate all the helpful criticism. I’m really enjoying this video editing I jumped into almost as much as I love the actual flying. S! Mayday 1
Raptorattacker Posted September 10, 2019 Posted September 10, 2019 Ha! Ha! I know exact;y what you mean! I enjoy the skinning, the filming AND the flying. Filing the planes being flown with skins that I make on!!
