  1. 1. Which of the following statements best reflects your own attitude to the in-game "grass effects".

    • Plants are not relevant in a flight sim. I'd always turn off the grass effects regardless of how they affect performance.

    • I do like a little "eye candy" but I only use the lower grass settings to keep the performance hit at ground level to a minimum.

    • "Eye candy" like ground foliage is important and there would need to be big hit to performace to stop me using the higher grass settings.

Many of you have been following my long term "Work in Progress" project to overhaul the natural world in this sim.

 

I recently posted a quick question asking if anybody knew of any game which currently produced more natural and believable plant life than Kingdom Come Deliverance? Obviously first person role-play/adventure/shooter type games running through the unreal or crysis game engines are very different to flight sims. If you were to develop the vast maps of a flight sim to the same level of detail of a game like Kingdom Come not only would it bankrupt the development team financially, it would also cripple even the fastest computers trying to run it.

 

However, that is not to say a mod-maker like myself can't do a lot to improve things, and as such I was wondering just how important this sort of work is to other people.

 

 

The following two images are of the simple and universal grass effect applied all over every map within in the IL-2 great battles game engine.

These next two images are of much more detailed ground cover, grass and foliage of the type seen in first person shooter type games.

Hopefully, if I've understood how the poll section of this forum works this post should include a question for others to vote on in terms of asking for their attitudes about the above and the importance of ground foliage in a flight-sim.

Maybe best to make clear that you are excluding Tank Corps from the poll? Ground war actually needs more realistic foliage. 

 

I voted 2 from a flying perspective, but from a ground war perspective I would vote 4.

I think its really important to have highest quality plants and foliage for TC as we would be at ground level.

As for flying, I think that I would like the highest quality possible that would not create massive performance issues say on mid ranged PC's

I recognise the distinction between the "ground war" of tank crew and the "air war" of those who fly, however the IL-2 game engine as written uses the same  grass system for both and as I personally have no interest in tanks or WWII my focus would be on achieving the best balance for WWI pilots who naturally seem to spend their time a bit closer to the ground than pilots of WWII.

 

Theoretically speaking I could completely re-do a sperate system on a map by map basis  but even then you tend to get pilots flying on those maps aimed at tanks, plus I've enough of a handful with this project as it is to consider putting extra time into a tank war that doesn't interest me. Though naturally I do understand there are those who would really like to see a major overhaul of the ground foliage to improve their experience in the tanks.

I get some stutter when taxiing on grassy ground.
Ended up editing game´s cfg for 1/10 of minimal grass distance.

The grass looks nice tho, I´d turn it up again if not for the stutter.

I think it's a lot more relevant for Tank Crew than BOX. So it would be nice to have different settings depending on what vehicle you are driving/flying.

It is very important for me when in ground vehicle.

In plane min. to increase the framerate.
