AH_Col_Hogan Posted July 28, 2019 Posted July 28, 2019 Why do the engines have so much visible exhaust trails? When I attend air shows with WWII aircraft I don't see the exhaust trails. Unless it's an F-86, B-52 or an F-4 Phantom. ?
JonRedcorn Posted July 28, 2019 Posted July 28, 2019 I would assume the pilots flying the planes at airshows aren't running their planes pig rich.
AH_Col_Hogan Posted July 28, 2019 Author Posted July 28, 2019 Agree. Do the engines in the game stop smoking when you lean them out?
Jaegermeister Posted July 28, 2019 Posted July 28, 2019 Yes, when you see an aircraft with black exhaust, it’s being run full rich/combat power

It is very important to manage your engine during flight - especially when you're able to manually set the mixture. As a Red pilot I very often enter the combat area fast and clean (water- and oil radiators mostly closed), but most important I keep my mixture as lean as possible to avoid those black smoke trails to disguise my approach into the combat zone and to avoid being detected much to early - sometimes it works very well, on some occasions not...

Lusekofte Posted July 31, 2019 Posted July 31, 2019 Just go for 65% mixture it set them on autorich. I would not call it engine management. Keeping engines in perfect temperature should slso help both in fumes and effect, but I am not sure if that is noticeable in this sim
RedKestrel Posted August 1, 2019 Posted August 1, 2019 The black exhaust trails at high power and mixture settings are consistent with memoirs I have read from the war. Just run cruise settings and the trails go away. Though the Ai is not so good at managing this. 1
