Wargame mode

Hi everyone,

 

while playing carreer as squadron leader, I thought how cool it could be to add a wargame element to this sim.

 

You being in charge of the limited air assets of either Luftwaffe or VVS during the specific battle, assigning missions, choosing targets keeping an eye on own supplies...

 

This of course would only work, if your decisions had an actual impact on ground operations as well, so ground forces and air forces alike would have limited ressources and a supply system (dependant on railroads) so that losses in the air and on the ground would actually matter...

 

Right now during carreer missions when for example tasked with escorting bombers you don't have to care for the big guys, because the only thing relevant is for you and your fighter comrades to return safely home and to collect a few kills. So the game rewards you better when you without any tactical sense follow a damaged enemy fighter who is leaving combat and shoot him down as when you ignore the good chance for a kill and stay with the bombers.

That would change when the bombers were limted and when their success in bombing their target would matter.

 

The career right now lets you become a WWII fighter pilot, which is awesome. But with such an wargame element, you could become part of military operation which for me would be even more thrilling.

 

PWCG already has limited ressources for all avation units in the area which already adds some more meaning to combat, than carreer mode. However if the player could plan airial operations that matter to the conflict it would be even greater I think!

 

The player than would not have to be one persona but could jump in any plane or tank that is part of the operations he planned...

 

Of course I am aware that such an addition is not a small one and take lots of work which then would obviously not be spend on new planes and/or maps. But I personally would be willing to pay for such a mode as addon.

I think this would benefit the game. More options in the same day without needing to reset using a loading screen.

But both TAW and Marshal mode are/will be MP only - correct?

 

I'd love something like that as SP flyer as well.

I'd like something like this for sure, but prefer resources went to other expansions and planes.

 

To be honest, I'd probably prefer a more dedicated game for this sort of thing. Something a little more sandbox orientated. A real time strategy game. Where you control an airfield(s). Train pilots. Build planes, fighters, attackers, bombers etc, then customize them. Weapons, skins, skills, plane modifications, etc. Then give your groups missions, setting altitude, speed, etc. Attacking this and escorting that. Protecting airfields, factories, harbors, carrier groups, etc. With maybe some limited player ability to fly individual planes. Maybe Warthunder mouse point and click style. More arcade based, and not a real sim. But still realistic within reason.

 

There is already a game that is sort of fulfilling this; Task Force Admiral. Even though its more navel oriented then aviation oriented. But it does seem to simulate air combat very well.

 

 

But yah, I'd like to see something like that in Il-2 in some aspect. I just don't expect much to come of it. Not really the focus of the sim.

MotherB, the infrastructure is somewhat in place for a strategy game. By that I don’t mean largely or completely in place. Most of the logic, ability to do what you describe exists.

 

I take great pleasure in watching tank battles, artillery, air battles play out when I’m testing missions.

 

This engine/game could be used as a base (more than just a base really) to create an excellent RTS game.

 

I build miniature versions of them all the time.

I made an endless tank logic group the other night.

15 on 15, when a tank dies it respawns itself back in the tree line and advances.

Very cool to watch.

A strategic layer, which SWOTL offered back then, would be a great addition to the singleplayer value of this game.

Most people ( as myself...)  enjoy glamorous Fighters and brilliant carreers,  just human beings.

In Wargames , Imperial Guard or Winged Hussars were most sought after,  in Naval : Victory or Yamato ?

True wonders, but in reality they were only the fewer, most expansive and most preserved  pieces.

 

So,  If you create military operation - with some historical background - everybody has a place and plays his part, from cooks to general. 

It 'ld be impossible to simulate cooks but JU52 loaded with shoes, bacon and beans, or stolen French Cognac are Top Value for Morale; U2  spies airfield at night and lands sabotage teams, Red Cross Aunt JU saves valuable wounded  ...... Spit Strato takes pictures, etc....

 

All these factors can be counted in Morale or efficiency,  supply must be considered , recco is elite unit, , etc...

This never diminish Aces merits but add some stuff and may offer opportunities for every player, specially if possible to jump on various places.

Give a chance to the forgotten heroes,  they were  probably just about 90% of any army !!!
