A couple of level bombing questions

Recommended Posts

1. Since I have no external view on most servers, how can I tell whether my bomb load is internal or external?

2. I believe the altitude in the bombsight is ASL. How do I know what the altitude of the target is so I can subtract it to set the bombsight?

1) when you outfit the bomber with bombs you can see the plane inside the hangar. Do you a 360 visual of it and you'll see the external loadout.

2) i use the read-outs inside the bombsight and the bomb seem to land right on target.. ..

Mmm. If the only way to tell is look at that picture before takeoff then there is surely an opportunity to improve the bombsight screen to include this info.

As for altitude, you never have to calibrate your altimeter for barometric pressure so presumably it's always adjusted so that your home airfield is zero. On the Moscow and Stalingrad maps, targets will usually be at a similar altitude to your airfield. On the Kuban map, not so much. One depot was on top of a mountain.

Pe 2 got only 6 internal bombs with 100 kg bombs. Bigger or more bombs are external

A 20 room 16 100 kg internal

I think he 111 and JU88 only got room for 50 kg bombs internal bigger are outside but I might be wrong I do not fly lw very much

You can see the bombs you carry on bombsight view and knowing if they are internal or not.

He 111 can also have Sc 250 in internal, 4 for H-6 and 8 for H-16

Here are some ways to get the target altitude:

  • Turn on the full mini-instrument panel, shown here:

Your height above ground level (AGL) is given by the number marked in red. This will give you a reasonably good bombsight altitude setting if the target is close to the same height as the ground at your current location.  However, I don't think there are many servers that allow the full mini-instrument panel, although I fly on full-real servers.

  • Mouse over the target icon and hope that the mission maker documented the target height in the Description field of the icon translator (hint hint mission makers)  :)

However, most times you just have to guesstimate the height. This post discusses setting your cockpit altimeter to field elevation (aka QFE) before takeoff. This post discusses one way to handle level bombing.

I checked this and it looks like it applies to Luftwaffe only, oddly enough. I have been flying a lot of VVS recently as I usually join the smaller side.

Right, I never notice that before.

But don't worrie when you do level bombing with the Pe2 or A20 you can open bombs bay doors when you are approaching target that's not prevent to drop your external bombs first.

Both planes have four external bombs racks. You can count your drops before opening the bombs bay if you are doing some diving attacks on target or low flying pass.

Nice behavior, we are not enough doing that.
