SeaW0lf Posted July 13, 2019 Posted July 13, 2019 Hello folks, I intend to do my Dr1 skin as a kind of homage to Voss, (to use the basic F.1 camouflage without the kite face / mustache), but I’m not sure about the color scheme. As you guys can see below, it varies a lot. If I recall correctly, the F.1’s had a different base color (undercoat?). From the photos, it varies from a light bluish tone to a bright turquoise. I tend to settled for a medium in between the 1, 6, 7 and 8. The others seem to be too white or green (does not sound like a war camouflage). I’m particularly interested in the 8, and you can see other photos here. The streaking are bad, but the bluish turquoise looks good. But Dan_San_Abbott, expert on the issue, says: The for prototypes, Fok. F.I 100. 102,103/17 were given three coats of clear dope and the tops of the wings, tailplane and fuselage were painted with one coat of olive-brown wash in a streaky finish on the fabric surfaces. The under sides of the wings, tailplane, axle wing, and fuselage were painted with one coat of sky blue with a coat of copal varnish over all surfaces for the purpose of water-proofing. The varnish caused a yellow shift in the sky blue to turquoise. The Axle wing top surface and all cowlings, engine, side and top panels were painted a solid olive brown. The cabane, interplane and tailplane struts, were painted sky blue and varnished, thus turquoise. The upper wing, fuselage and rudder crossfields were painted flat white over matte black crosses. The matte black crosses under the lower wing were painted on the clear doped cross fields, they were NOT painted white. All markings were matte black. In general people say that you “can’t be wrong”, since no one knows for sure how they were painted. Any insights for the allegedly turquoise ‘undercoat’? Over the whole fuselage or just under? Cheers, 2
ZachariasX Posted July 14, 2019 Posted July 14, 2019 We had a longer discussion about the painting in the thread „Richthofen Red“. You might also get an inspiration from this PDF about the reconstruction of a Dr.I. Is is from here: https://epdf.pub/queue/fokker-dri-in-detail.html ) One has to keep in mind that in order to deliver an aircraft to the field, Fokker had to comply to official regulations about the camouflage paint. They were checked for compliance at the factory. It means that ALL personalized liveries had to have this minimal required paint before the could be overpainted. 1
No.23_Triggers Posted July 14, 2019 Posted July 14, 2019 (edited) I painted up one of my own Dr.I's like this - here's how it came out. I think it looks closest to your No.3 example... Edited July 14, 2019 by US103_Larner 2

I saw that thread, I just think the prototypes had a different color. But in fairness no one knows for sure. I think I'll go with the light blue slightly turquoise of the number 8 because of the varnish effect. 1 hour ago, US103_Larner said: I painted up one of my own Dr.I's like this - here's how it came out.
