widget Posted July 11, 2019 Posted July 11, 2019 Dear Developers: Please consider reducing the gloss level of the official skins. At present, they have an unrealistic glassy/glossy look. Some example photos of museum exhibits follow. 1. https://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/research/collections/supermarine-spitfire-vb/ 2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ilyushin_IL-2_Sturmovik,_Central_Air_Force_Museum,_Monino.JPG 3. https://airandspace.si.edu/collection-objects/curtiss-p-40e-warhawk-kittyhawk-ia 4. https://airandspace.si.edu/collection-objects/messerschmitt-bf-109-g-6r3 You may be aware that restored warbirds are typically painted with more glossy paint compared to wartime paint. The reason is the harder gloss layer (compared to the matte pigment colour layer) provides a bit more protection against damage and is also easier to clean. 1
SharpeXB Posted July 11, 2019 Posted July 11, 2019 You can see some shine in period footage, depending on the plane. I always think that dull flat paint just looks really terrible in a game. Glossy looks nice.
VBF-12_Stick-95 Posted July 11, 2019 Posted July 11, 2019 Whether it was high gloss or matte depended on the country, material (fabric, wood, metal), summer or winter camo and time period during the war. Some countries also used a clear coat to make it harder and smoother. Glossier paint has less drag than matte. Russian pilots complained about the matte winter paint because of this. What I want in the game are skins as close to historic as possible. There is a huge selection of custom skins that has the gloss turned down to more "historic" levels where apprropriate.
SharpeXB Posted July 13, 2019 Posted July 13, 2019 Why worry about the glossy on the skins when there are even bigger problems with them? Mainly that there aren’t enough official ones and the system (or lack of one) for user made skins is a disastrous mess
