DUTTENHOFER Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 (edited) Imagine you had all the worlds combined technology and (reasonable) resources at the time of WWII. What kind of fighter aircraft would you make? A bf-109 with 20mm buckshot? A Zero with detachable armor plates? I'm currently in a nation-building game, and I want to steal good ideas from those who know more than I do. :D Edited February 18, 2013 by DUTTENHOFER
VeryOldMan Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 q ww1 plane with little boy under 1 wing and fat man under the other.
DUTTENHOFER Posted February 18, 2013 Author Posted February 18, 2013 q ww1 plane with little boy under 1 wing and fat man under the other. Which plane? I don't think a fighter could carry 2 bombs both around 5000kg, without removing badass streamers of course.
DD_fruitbat Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 i185 or a J2M3, well at least in il2......

Caudron431 Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 (edited) EDIT : A combat version of Piaggio P180 Avanti But since we have stay WW2 technology, i would say Kyushu J7W "zwilling" with possibility of separation Edited February 19, 2013 by RegRag1977
SvAF/F19_Klunk Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 I'd settle with my trusty old I-16 (type 24 mind you).. or I-153P Long live Cr@pGalore!!
Bearcat Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 I'd want a plane with the firepower of a 190, the maneverability of a JM2, the range of a Mustang, the climb of a 109, the dive of a Jug and looks a cross between a Spit amd a Mustang. 1
Letum Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 Something with short wings, a really high wing load, a tiny canopy, a single 20mm in the nose, an over engineered structure, twin pull-pull engines in the single fusalage and tricycle landing gear. It would be heavy, slow to climb, have horrible visiability, take a very long time to turn, have poor proformance at altitude, have little firepower and have an unreasonably high landing speed. On the other hand it would be fast with it's short wings, low drag canopy, twin engines and lack of wing guns. It's heavy frame will mean it is somewhat resistant to damage, but more importantly it allows for a high dive speed and excelent energy retention after a dive.
Bearcat Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 I just ordered this for $12 ... Thanks for posting..
wayno77 Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 Have to be an He 219 with maneuverability of a Ki 43....
BlitzPig_EL Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 Curtiss Hawk 75 with a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 of 2000bhp. That should do the trick.
Bf-110 Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 A Bf-110 the wings,engines and tail of the Me-262 and plus a 30mm cannon.
AX2 Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 I'd want a plane with the firepower of a 190, the maneverability of a JM2, the range of a Mustang, the climb of a 109, the dive of a Jug and looks a cross between a Spit amd a Mustang. +1
Volkoff Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 (edited) If we are talking about real World planes, a Yak 3, Lavochkin 7, or a Yak 9U, would do nicely. If we are talking about made up planes, a Skyly J2, like the one flown by The Teacher in Sky Crawlers. MJ P.S. Great videos Hiro! Edited August 31, 2013 by =69.GIAP=MIKHA
Finkeren Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 Come on. You guys aren't going near crazy enough. How about a gigantic German bomber killer with an automatic version of the Flak 18 as motorkanone?

Lord_Haw-Haw Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 Hmm lets see, a few of these: Or this baby for a early 1940s situation! And to go totally bananas: 1
Skoshi_Tiger Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 (edited) I dont care how good it was, im not going to be seen flying that...wow...that's one ULGY plane. LoL! I guess I fall into the big is beautiful camp! Seriously I think its simply what happens when you design a plane for a radial Pratt&Whitney R-2800 and they give you an inline Rolls Royce Griffin Mk61 at the last minute! But I don't know, I kind of like the Mustang on 'roids kind-of look! Cheers! Edited August 31, 2013 by Skoshi_Tiger
Zoring Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 I always thought that a twin 20mm cannon armed 109 would be ideal. One in the spinner and one on the nose, having two 20mm guns that close together is the ideal balance of firepower and weight. The Yak3P? I think in IL2 was my favourite plane with that gun configuration.
Jaws2002 Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 Here's an idea. A twin engine fighter with engine setup similar to Do335, but without all the bomber crap added. 1x30mm Ho155 cannon in the prop hub loaded with German 30mm M-geshos, plus four Hispano Mk5 loaded with German 20mm M-geshos (two on top of the nose and two in the wing roots)

What kind of fighter aircraft would you make? A bf-109 with 20mm buckshot? A Zero with detachable armor plates? I'm currently in a nation-building game, and I want to steal good ideas from those who know more than I do. :D It would depend on the nation and the time period. Germany really would have benefited from better radar equipped night fighters to deal with the night time bombing towards the end of the war. If they had the technology earlier and put it in a longer ranged aircraft if could have made the night bombing in England more effective, especially if they had radar in bombers with sufficient resolution to look at the ground and pick out landmarks. Germany really didn't need more effective fighters though, I think. They need more of what they had, and pilots and parts and gas. The same was true for Japan. They didn't need a super-fighter. They needed more of what they had and pilots to fly them. England could have used a long range patrol aircraft with a searchlight, radar and a decent cannon and bombs or depth charges earlier in the war to find and destroy surfaced U-boats, as could the US. When the US was conducting bomber raids deep into Germany, they might have benefited from parasite fighters. The Russians did a little of that, so did Japan and Germany sure thought about it. I don't know that the US did much until after the war. The US had an advantage though - we had James Brodie. We saw his system work mounted on ships and on the ground, and similar systems had been tried with airships. So, a small, maneuverable, short-ranged fighter that doesn't need to give up a lot of space or weight for fuel and could potentially even be rearmed from its mother ship could have escorted bombers into Germany when no other plane could go the distance. Maybe one out of ten heavy bombers being a mothership rather than a bomber? That might have been useful. I am envisioning something like a trailing Brodie system so that a fighter could be lowered and released, then later recovered and winched back up to ride below where the bomb bay would normally be. The finicky part would be sudden changes in pitch, airspeed and airflow as the parasite got close to the mother but before it was secured against the fuselage.

Looks amazing and actually somewhat feaseble.
