Finkeren Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 A few days ago my il-2.exe file went missing from the game directory, and hence I have been able to play the game. Turns out, it was my anti-virus system that had quarantined the file, no biggie, I can just restore it - except I can't, because the settings on the C:\Program Files (x86)\1C Game Studios\IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles\bin\game folder prevents me from moving the .exe file back in. The whole thing is set to "read only" and despite trying every possible solution, I just can't seem to change that setting. I have tried: Running as administrator Granting full control and ownership for the entire directory or individual subfolders to both administrators and users under the security tab Renaming the entire game directory Using a different copy of the il-2.exe file Nothing I have tried so far has let me alter the settings of the game directory or any subfolders. When I try restoring the file via AVG, I simply get the message that "this file could not be restored" and when I try to move it manually, I get a message that I need "permission", and when I click the button (marked as administrator), it seems to start the transfer only to immediately pop up a new message, that I need permission to do this. I'm running fully updated Windows 10 btw. I'm kinda at a loss for what to try next.
Hawk-2a Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 Maybe you need to first somehow whitelist said file in your antivirus program (manually override the automatic detection system, at least in norton it‘s possible) and only then restore the file or download it again through the il2 launcher update.

I'm pretty sure it isn't the antivirus causing this issue, even if it was that which caused the problems to begin with, I can restore other files from quarantine without trouble, it is only this one that gets denied. I also have a second copy of the .exe file that is not in quarantine, and I can't manually copy that one into the game folder either. It very much seems to be Windows that is denying it, not AVG.
Hawk-2a Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 hm okay.... https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-files/cannot-change-read-only-file-attributes-using/b02b2254-cd4d-4e50-a68a-cae8c748d086 that's what i have found. maybe this helps to get rid of the "read only" for the folder

None of the suggested solutions (mostly centered around giving users/administrators ownership and "full control" in the security tab) have fixed the issue, it still reverts right back to "read only".
DD_FT- Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 (edited) Could this be caused by UAC being switched on / on too high a level? Edited July 3, 2019 by DD-FT-

DD_FT- Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 Windows Defender - is it off, does it recognize AVG properly as the current anti virus solution?
Beebop Posted July 7, 2019 Posted July 7, 2019 (edited) Have you tried moving the game OUT of C:\Program Files (x86)\ ? Since Vista Windows is afraid you know nothing and will mess up your computer and blame them for it so files in "Proram Files" or "Program Files (x86) are blocked from having chnages made to any .ini file or file marked as "Read Only". Put the game anywhere else. I have mine on the 'C' drive using no folder. Game runs fine and I can make any changes I deem necessary including changing file attributes from 'Read Only'. ALWAYS make backups before modifying any file. If you screw it up you can re-download the game from the site. All your content is saved on their coud server so you get your entire game back although you might need to reset your control settings etc. Once you have a working version of your settings make a copy and save the file to a safe location. You can use it to regain those settings if they are lost/modified again. Just a thought. Edited July 7, 2019 by Beebop 1
FlyingH Posted July 7, 2019 Posted July 7, 2019 YOu´ve posted the problem twice now. Didn´t you read the answers in your first topic? I gave the same advice as Beebop here. You should try and report back what works and what not when wew are trying to help!

I will try out his suggestion and report how it goes. The reason I posted a second topic is, that it's really a different issue now. Before it was about the missing .exe file, now it's about my inability to move the file back to its original folder, so in order to not cause confusion, I made a second topic.
DD_FT- Posted July 8, 2019 Posted July 8, 2019 Me thinks in the end it is the same issue: Something on your system really does not want you to put or have that file in there ...

I don't think so. As it turned out, it was my antivirus quarantining the file. I can restore other files from quarantine just fine, including an earlier version of the .exe file to a directory no longer used by the game. In any case, moving the complete game folder out of Program Files seems to have fixed the issue for now. I was able to insert acopy of the .exe file into the right folder now. Thanks to all who helped me out. You guys are the greatest. It's shocking how out-of-touch I've become with computers over the years. Solving an issue like this used to be routine for me, now I just run around in circles and forget the most basic rules. Edited July 8, 2019 by Finkeren
FlyingH Posted July 9, 2019 Posted July 9, 2019 Glad you got it sorted and I´m sorry (sort of) for the brisk comment I made. I guess my memory also will begin to slip as years go by!
