Spitfire Mk XVI?

It's perhaps an idea along the lines of the more the merrier, but the more I read on the Big Ben (anti V2) operations, the more I get the idea that requesting the Mk XVI spitfire in a package with the Mk XIV, might be the better way to go here..

What would it add over the late IX we have now? Especially if the XIV when it arrives brings the bubble canopy?

There were two versions of the XIV..with and without the teardrop canopy.

A XIV would represent a very significant increase in power and speed over the IX we have now, by some 35-40 MPH. The XIV's made their presence known starting in mid 44 until the end of the war, so they'd be a known element in the represented time frame.

How about a ground attacker on the RAF side? currently there's only the Tempest and the Mk IX there, whereas the US gets the P51, P47 and P38..

The XVI is just a Mk IX with an engine built in the USA. Totally pointless.

Yes but this thread is about the XVI. I fully expect to see an XIV collector plane soon after launch.

Surely then the Typhoon or Mosquito would be better suited?

In that case I would pick the Typhoon. The Mosquito would be more adept in the medium bomber role then..

Typhoon absolutely, nearly mandatory. A Mosquito (B and FB) wouldn't fit the map unless you are thinking of a Mosquito PR or NF (but then the P-61 would still be a better fit).

Quite a few Mosquito types served with 2TAF

I know, but only (detachments of) NF and PR Mosquito units were based within the BoBP-maps boundaries during the BoBP-timeframe. No base => no campaign

I'd rather see a Spitfire Mk XVIII than a Mk XVI.

Not sure what role recon would have...but it'd be different

[edited] I meant to write VIII.

A Mk VIII would be fun for a MTO map

And a Mk VIII would be good for a South Pacific map with the RAAF
