Uufflakke Posted June 28, 2019 Posted June 28, 2019 Lesson learned from this video: best protection against 152 mm artillery shells is armoured plates a row of six juicy watermelons. 2

Finkeren Posted June 28, 2019 Posted June 28, 2019 Jeezuz ? So much to unpack from that. Great stuff. First: Firing tank cannons in game kicks up way too little dust and dirt, but I kinda already knew that. Firing anything larger than a 37mm should pretty much give away your position immediately in dry weather. Second: That wobbling 76mm round! That can't be right. It looks like a bloody arrow being fired from a bow. The bore must be seriously worn out or something. One of these days it's gonna completely shatter the muzzle brake. Third: Apparently the Soviets can at least build guns that shoot straight. Fourth: My idea about the effect of a heavy, supersonic projectile passing very close by an object is completely wrong. I always had the idea, that an artillery shell passing right by you would tear your limbs off or something. But that 152mm monster at near muzzle velocity passed over those melons by a hair's breadth, and they were completely fine. Fifth: I'm not exactly surprised, that the row of melons deflected the 152mm shell. In practical terms, the shell was just hitting a bunch of water, and we know how much projectiles are affected, when hitting water. Had they fired that cannon out towards the sea, pretty much the same thing would've happened: The shell would've made a splash, bounced off the water, started tumbling through the air as it rapidly decelerated. Amazing video.
Garven Posted June 28, 2019 Posted June 28, 2019 Looks like nobody told them how to properly insert ear plugs. 1

I can only theorise that because its the only firing and driving Sherman in the world that it has done a lot of firing and the bore is, as you say, very badly worn. I dont think it should yaw and wobble like that in flight. Maybe they have also reduce the powder load to save the gun, so its travelling slower than it should? 12 hours ago, Finkeren said: Fourth: My idea about the effect of a heavy, supersonic projectile passing very close by an object is completely wrong. Just dont stand too close or you'll get hectic powder burns like the poor first melon. RIP first melon... 12 hours ago, Finkeren said: Fifth: I'm not exactly surprised, that the row of melons deflected the 152mm shell. Never would have thought it would do that, but there we are.. Edited June 29, 2019 by Flashy 1

Actually, the water/vaporized watermelon is getting out of the way, but only sideways, where it can travel through air, and not downwards, where it has to travel through yet more watermelon, hence deflecting the projectile upwards. 1
Tyberan Posted June 30, 2019 Posted June 30, 2019 I think the wobbly 76mm projectiles are not the original shells but rather some cheaper machined version, that's just a lump of mild steel rather than the original.
