What planes use formation lights?

I just recently noticed Formation lights addition to keymaps. Any info on what planes have them, and how to use them is appreciated.

mostly american planes, and the spitfire IIRC

P-39, P-47, A-20, and both Spitfires

Yeah, the P51 should have them too when it's out.

Besides being used to help keep planes in formation, they were also used as a sort of primitive communication / identification system, as they could be switched on and off either manually or (in the case of the American planes) set to automatically blink on and off. 

 

(On a side note, I have an original P-47 formation light switchbox, much like the one in the game, converted to work as a game controller).
