Finally Picked Up Kuban!

Yeah...I'm a cheap S.O.B.! It was on sale, how could I not? What a beautiful map. And the A-20 has quickly become one of my favorite airplanes, in here. I'm practicing alot with it so I can try it on-line. Never cared much for bombers, but this thing is fun.

But that map! I've been flying all over it and it could easily be New Guinea, or even the Phillipines. Great Pacific Island stand in. If only they'd give us a couple of Japanese planes to play with. Good module. Oh, and I've managed to fly my P-39 into the ground, four out of four flights! Seems more prone to having its controls lock up in a dive than the the P-47.

It’s a beautiful map.  I often take the  P-39 and look down on those muddy rivers, imagining it is the Markham river valley in New Guinea.  With a couple of Zeros skimming its surface on the way back to Lae.

Haha been there too. Panic pitch trimming before giving mother earth a good Glasgow kiss.

The Havoc is a very fun plane indeed, you do sort of feel like in a fighter until looking out the sides at those monster radials.

I almost can't see any reason to use the other ones, anymore.

Kuban is definitely the most interesting and prettiest map.  If I am just doing sightseeing there is no other option.  Mountains. Water.  Beautiful shorelines.

Nice plane set too.  Another FW190 makes me happy.  I don't like the HS129 but I like having it.  P39 is nice and different.  Good stuff.

Looking forward to a taste of western Europe with BoBP.  The scenery probably won't be as interesting but the towns should be nice.

I just purchased Kuban the other day and I think it is the best of all!  Really love the map and the scenery is fantastic as others have stated. Should work well with BOBP. The team has done a fantastic job with Kuban.

Agreed, and also the upcoming BOBP map will be highly interesting and a true test of what the game engine is capable of.

If I look at the supposed size of the next -BOBP- map, knowing that even at the time of WWII that part of the world was very populated and urbanized, I very much look forward to that one  too.

FWIW I would like to compare part of it to the Normandy map of DCS WWII... Just curious.

What I like to do is take the p51 in DCS around Kuban and than get the 47 up i IL2, time Travel ?

A little out of topic, but are A-20s able to conduct ground attack instead of level-bombing now? Pretty interested in taking them for a spin in the Kuban campaign; their locations in the map are interesting to me.

I figure they would work with outer wing bombs but I'm not so certain. Haven't had a chance to try messing with the settings yet.

They are well suited fir ground attack. Guns and lot of bombs. And almost out of this world with power and maneuverability

Absolutely. I remember when it first came out I tried to take it out with a 109. Thought I'd get to bully it easy. It wasn't having any.

As far as ground attack goes; last time I used it in the Career the whole flight would default to level bombing. Either that or go around in circles (not sure I was patient enough to observe if they actually went into attack - I landed before I could find out).

I don't know if this has anything to do with Russian bases only having missions for level bombing or if it's the loadout. But every time I go out it's usually just level bombing stuff. Kinda sad I couldn't take advantage of that power and maneuverability that much unless I leave the flight to do it's thing and break off to do my own.

Shame, a lot of Kuban's scenery is absolutely worth hugging the ground.

I read the pilots got rid of the forward fiering guns to lighten up the aircraft. So they probably

used-it exclusively as levelbomber.

RAF I believe too.

Hard to kill it in 1 pass with 20mms. either destroy the elevator or try to hit the engine/wing. But for engine/wing, it needs to be really accurate fire to 1 point. Elevator is the safest bet.

With 30mm Mk108 this is a whole different story. 1-3 hits on control surfaces and game over.

You might want to purchase Gambit's scripted campaign for the A20. I still have to do it myself, but I definitely will, after having had a lot of fun with his Pelican missions for the Ju52, I am absolutely sure, it will be worth it.

It's worth every penny and a lot of work went into it. I am playing IL-2 since very first beta back in 2014 (i think) and never cared for singleplayer.

Gambit's Campaign really got me hooked. It's the best showcase of how immersive a well scripted campaign can be.

A-20 is great bomber/ground attacker, and this type of experience is much better than flying fighter planes in SP since you don't loose immersion by dealing with rather dumb enemy fighter AI.

On top of that Gambit's missions take you on some very scenic flights in Kuban map. Combination of time of the day (light on the map) , clouds and mission area , make for some of the best sights in the game.

Ground and air activity is high, airfields are full of static and active planes. I really get an impression of being a part of large conflict. I don't get that in MP where the amount of objects is usually quite low.

Also i find Havoc over Kuban a great benchmarking tool to measure your rig's performance. I upgraded my PC recently and Gambit's campaign was what I used to test my new rig.

Long story short, get Havoc over Kuban. Support content creators and have a blast in your A-20.

The entire campaign is low level interdiction/ground attack.

Exacly the motivational boost that I need in preparation to really dive into the P-47 campaign. Thanks!
