pa4tim Posted June 24, 2019 Posted June 24, 2019 (edited) Not ment as a discussion about how to rework tank controls but a wish. Can one of the devs make a document about tank controls. I think most new users have problems with the controls because they are pretty hard to figure out and already a few times I made improvements after I read on the forum how someone else did some set up. Like the snap function and the operation of the periscopes. If I had not read here too I never would have know you can turn them. Maybe it is not so cripple as we think. I think the devs also play their own game and if it was really as "bad" as I now think (the controls, not TC it self, it is in progress and already awsum), they would probably have changed it. So maybe I do something wrong. Edited June 24, 2019 by pa4tim
photog95661 Posted June 26, 2019 Posted June 26, 2019 I downloaded the attached TC tank controls list from the Forum. I do not recall who posted it, or where. I am not trying to steal anyone's hard earned kudos, just helping a brother tanker.. Il-2 Tank Crew Default Key Mapping Listing Ver. 3.012.zip 1
pa4tim Posted June 27, 2019 Author Posted June 27, 2019 Thanks, but I already found those. Besides that I have remapped everything and I use an old keyboard and labeled all keys exclusive for IL-2 with a labelmaker. Together with a joystick and throttle unit. Almost no double keys. Everything grouped and uniform. For planes this works very well. I would like to have a manual that states what every control function does. Not what letter is used as default. An explanation to tell you what they do. Maybe some pictures or a video fragment explaining things. Like all the different cameras and the control of periscope-visors. I found out by accident that you can adjust the vertical cross-hair on some tanks with the horizontal visor adjustment. Or something simple as the brakes from a plane. I found out that some planes use the flightstick to lock the rear-wheel, others need a separate key and some do not have a lockable wheel at all. I was fiddling around with the controls and by accident noticed they added some gear limit controls for TC, I still have no clue what their use is. I know what they do but why do we need them ? An rpm limiting mechanisme can protect the engine but a shift limiter can only cause over revving. Now are some examples plane or tank depended but things like that should also be documented. For most because this is a simulator and also one you need to buy. And maybe the info is somewhere, the community has done a lot, but it is a bit hard to find if you are new to the game. The controls are very important. An in base good game can become a very bad player experience if the controls are bad (set up or bad in design). It is very good if you have many options and freedom but only if they are well documented. I have no problem to find most things on my own. But there are things I maybe do wrong and so spoil the experience for me. Documenting is not much work for the people who designed them and updating them is not much work either if you compare it to the rest. It is not like they add new controls weekly. The DCS manuals are great but a bit over the top (i do like them but it is much more then I need and I for the rest I prefer IL-2 ) but IL-2 seems to have completely nothing at all. I do not mind to make a tutorial explaining every function so people can set up their game to their wishes but in that case I need some help to fill in things I do not know or maybe use wrong. (I play this game only for a few weeks now) 1
photog95661 Posted June 27, 2019 Posted June 27, 2019 Ah, I understand what you are looking for now. If such documentation exists, I am not aware of it. I try to keep an eye on the Forum for any material that will deepen my knowledge of the sim. If I find any, I will post it here. If your luck is better than mine, please share it as well.
