616Sqn_SpocksOddSocks Posted June 19, 2019 Posted June 19, 2019 (edited) Ok, this server isn't intended to be running 24/7 and is currently in an open testing stage, but it will be running frequently. At the moment, it's running copies of the the pre 3.10 update missions from the DED Normal server, plus an edited version of their Kuban mission with mixed plane sets at both airstarts. That edited Kuban is currently the only mission with the me262 available for now, and is somewhere in the middle of the rotation. The rest are running in alphabetical order. All missing descriptions (something I've tried to get working, with no luck. Presumably, due to them being created in a Russian language version of the editor, and updated in an English language version). Eventually, it should have it's own missions (I'm not a mission builder myself, but I know people who are working on some) rather than shameless copies, or perhaps a combination. Whilst it's intended mostly as fun and partly to fill the void during the turbulent nature of the DED Normal server atm, there is a working stats page running for those who like to see how they're doing. http://ohmydog.mooo.com:8082 Be aware though, that this is running on a local machine of mine, so the stats page will only be available when the server itself is. Any issues, let me know, or post here. I'd particularly like to know how the AI planes are behaving in the Moscow mission, as they were warping a little on my end, and that was from an internal connection, but I didn't see any performance issues on the server itself. Edit: Also, there will be some inconsistencies in the stats to begin with while I keep tweaking the custom scoring system. 616Sqn_SpocksOddSocks Posted June 23, 2019 Author Posted June 23, 2019 I have been mostly resting the hardware whilst the DED server was running, but I've put this back up since tonight's outage with most of the DED missions (with one or two removed). The edited Kuban mission with mixed plane sets is still the only one with the me262, but it now occurs after every 3 other missions.

The stats site now also has tank and gunner rankings. (Many thanks have to go to Mr_Pickles of "Action Dogfight and Tanks" for his assistance in that part. I'm not sure I'd have got it running without his help). http://ohmydog.mooo.com:8080 As with others that have tank rankings, it an unsupported modification to Vaal's stat system, and not without errors/omissions. (Chiefly being the lack of detailed information of objects you've destroyed in the "sortie" log, and the fact that all missions result in the tank as being destroyed). It's also possible this server will be handed over to another admin in the near future (who can more reliably run it on a more permanent basis). The missions in rotation are still (often modified) versions of DED missions. Original mission design replacement is still in progress. I've run teamspeak servers in the past but I do not know if a game server rental is cost prohibitive. Any interest in partnering up with me an your FMB capable buddies? I'm already fed up with the 262 and this may be the push to rent an actual server. I do have a few ideas as to what makes a good map, and find some of the DED philsophies wanting, but I'm willing to work with a team towards a good and steady server. Murf 2
616Sqn_SpocksOddSocks Posted August 3, 2019 Author Posted August 3, 2019 (edited) Me262s are slowly making their way back into most missions (with limited numbers, with the exception of the Kuban map anyone played on the server will be familiar with). There are other changes coming, bit at a time. There are many asking about the limiting of mods for the 262, particularly the engine mod. That is something I would eventually like to see implemented. However, it isn't just a case of selecting the mods that are locked. You actually have to lock mods on the server itself, then manually add in the ones that you want to be available. That has to be done for every single plane at every single airfield, in every single map. As you can imagine, that's actually quite a lot of work to remove just one thing. The same is true for limiting fuel loadouts*. I do want to add that, but considering the time it will take, isn't as much of a priority as further mission design, and mission editing. *Edt: In fact it is impossible to allow custom fuel loads for any plane if fuel loads are locked on the server. The current version of Lapino running has most Allied and Axis planes on both sides. That is only temporary (while mania around the new planes wears off a little), and will put back to normal in no more than a week's time.

No idea why the development team lists it as a mod, other than to replicate the early Jumo 004 engines from before Bodenplatte. By the time of Bodenplatte all 262s already had the newer injection systems installed. You can read about this in JG7 unit history.

At that time, allies had nothing with engines that late (the 1944 engine for the mk.ix has only just arrived with the new update, and we didn't even know it would arrive at the time). Even if going for historical accuracy, it would not have been unreasonable to lock that modification (and it is a modification in the game client, hence the terminology being used) where the 262 was available.

Accurate for summer, or fall of 1944 Jumo engine yes, not really accurate for Bodenplatte timeframe of late 1944/early 1945. So if historical accuracy is what you are going for it would be a slippery slope as a whole lot of boxes could be unticked for certain aircraft. Really enjoy the original mission using Kuban map with destroyer on it by the way - it’s a much more imaginative map than the basic rehashes on the other server. One caveat though - I sunk that destroyer and got a whole 30 points. A destroyer is a lot of work to sink and is a capital asset. Seems 200 points (at least) for sinking a destroyer would be more realistic. Just saying ?.

There was a lot of anger over the 262 in particular, and pointing out that locking mods can isn't as easy as just unchecking what you want to remove. Instead, you have to lock everything, and choose what is allowed instead. The number of points awarded in game is not set by mission builders or server owners, but by the devs (buit into the game client). It used to be 200 points in game, right up until the pz.iv was added, I think. I'm not 100% certain when it changed, only that it did, and not too long ago. EDIT: also, the amended DED missions were only originally placeholders because mission building takes a lot of time, and we wanted somewhere people could play during the issues on DED. They aren't just rehashes, they ARE the actual DED missions, but with some things changed. The mission you mentioned (not actually mine), but was a month in the making, and still needs some tweaking to lighten the load. Once that's done, it's likely to end up on DED as well. I hope the devs increase it back because it’s not easy taking out a destroyer, lol. I wish the ME wasn’t so hard to work with. Sorry, when I said rehash I was not referring to your server but to DED. Also, thanks for giving us an alternate when DED is down.
616Sqn_SpocksOddSocks Posted October 4, 2019 Author Posted October 4, 2019 Just to let everyone know, there seems to have been a bug introduced with yesterday's patch where certain missions show no bases at all on joining. It only seems to affect missions where all bases are able to be captured, and there is a workaround. If you select any of the four options along the bottom ("server info", "statistics", "become a gunner" or "spectate") then close the dialogue, then the bases do appear. 1

This still needs some work (I have a few things in mind), but I thought I'd let it run. It will currently run twice in each rotation of the missions. EDIT: I should also add that allied ground assets are also currenly Russian units on "Venlo". This is partly for balance, and for the fact that the newer US ground assets are not counting as kills within the game client (though they do seem to be producing server logs, so they would count on the stats page). The server and stats page are still up, but stats will stop updating missions briefly until sometime tomorrow. I have decided to test an alternative scoring system, and that means making further alterations to the stats system. Missions that are flown during that time will eventually end up on the site, hopefully later tomorrow, utilizing the new scoring method. An issue where a rollback on the Kuban mission meant that only the "free" tanks were available has been rectified. Several other users now have adminatrative functions on the server, so at least some of the work can be shared around. A number of users have received bans on the server over the past month for a variety of reasons, some of which may currently be under review for potential lifting by the server admins. Unfortunately, due to other commitments, no further work has been undertaken on the Venlo mission to finish the tank objective, but work on this should resume again soon, followed by work on further missions on the Reinland map. 1

Please note that this is a trial, and if it doesn't work well, it can be reverted after this month. Now, instead of the scoring system that calculates rating based on score per hour and per virtual life, it will be a straight score multiplied by "ratio". The ratio is dependent on whether you are flying in the coalition with the majority or minority, so if you are outnumbered on most of your sorties that ratio is above 1, and if you are in the majority, that is below 1. The bonus for landing on individual sorties has been increased from 25% to 50%, and penalties for deaths/captures/bailouts etc. are now added to make up for the lost penalty from the older scoring system. A death is -75%, capture -50%, bailout/shotdown -25%. I would have liked to have separated tank players from this system, particularly due the incomplete and buggy nature of this unsupported feature, but that's going to require more work for me to figure out. If the November test goes well, I might look into that further. Edit: I've amended this slightly. There was an error where the incorrect ratio was being used in the calculation. This should now be fixed. Also, I've taken out the bailout/shotdown penalty. Only deaths and captures give the penalties now. This is fairer for tank players (who count as destroyed too easily) and seeing as the bonus for landing is increased, I think makes sense. Edited November 3, 2019 by SpocksOddSocks
616Sqn_SpocksOddSocks Posted November 13, 2019 Author Posted November 13, 2019 I've decided to revert to the old scoring system for the time being, and as such the the period using the test is now a closed tour. I've also added the mod by 77.CountZero with his work on tanks which are more complete and elegant than ours, or even other tank stat attempts I'd seen. The new version solves the issue we were having where some tank "sorties" were not being recorded. Whilst the tank missions that were already missing will still be missing, new ones should all count. I could, in theory, rebuild the stats from the logs in order to show them, but it would be a hassle unpacking all of the backups, so unless there's a catastrophic loss, I'll be leaving the past few months as they were.

However, for most of the server history we ran a mission with all planes on both sides. Whilst I always thought it was good to have some fantasy missions in that vein, there always seems to be more hate and complaints about it than there is for them. I definitely won't rule it out though, if there ends up being enough support for it.

Bear in mind, the network problem still hasn't been resolved, so there might be some instability. I'm hoping things will get a proper in the next couple of days, but I can't really guarantee it.

It's been down for nearly 24 hours, and is taking longer than expected to restore. The server will be back, but I currently have no estimate as to when. 1
