Is there a thread with links to diy joysticks or gimbals for joysticks? I would really like to build my own stick.

More easy way to make one is 3D Print, like this two projects - for desktop use

If you want use long extension and have proper tools for metal work*, or have accessible ($$$) CNC service near, look in Makino project:

A modern joystick gimbal design is the ones that use CAM system for centralization (like BRD, VPC, VKB, MFG, Slaw), compressed spring like Warthog, T.16000M, X-5'x'... or expansion springs like CH, Cougar... are obsolete mechanic solutions, both create issues when crossing center position.

Taking Cougar gimbal as example you can see that is need use more force for move stick from central position, than after, same happens with other mentioned stick gimbals.
