Chuck_Owl Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 Good evening, everyone! I know many of us come from the Il-2 1946 community and I was wondering if 777 intended to make the aircraft's tail customizable. I don't feel like saying "I want X or Y implemented for Z reason", but I think that allowing the community to share their feelings on the subject might be a way to demonstrate our interest. So I'm asking you... what is your opinion on this? Would you like to be able to choose your tail number? Would you want to add, say, a 6-digit alphanumerical tail serial number like in Cliffs of Dover? Do you feel making the tail customizable futile and a waste of time? Please vote on the poll and share your thoughts. Please explain your choices. I'll go first: I'd want to see the tail serial number and the tail number customizable. Why? In Cliffs of Dover, virtual squadron flights tend to involve many different pilots and most of the time, people only fly in full realism servers (no icons, so no way to recognize the aircraft's pilot). For instance, my tail number is XR-O (which makes me easily recognizable on the runway). When flying in formation, the only way one of my wingmen might know it's me is when he sees my tail number on the aircraft itself. IMHO, it helps have better unit cohesion and esprit de corps. We also like to add alphanumerical serial numbers on the tail (most of the time, we write our initials like "CHUCK" or "JESTER" or "WULFIE"... 'makes the aircraft feel more like our own machine. 1
FlatSpinMan Posted March 27, 2014 Posted March 27, 2014 Depends on who you fly for, doesn't it? In a Luftie bird, a six digit tail code would look really out of place, wouldn't it? That or, assuming it's the thingamajig - flugzeugwerk number??? - it'd be too small to see. Decal-type fuselage numbers or codes would be great of course. Anything to make your crate a little more unique. I'd really, really love kill mark ability. On the tail for the LW, beneath the cockpit for most other countries. 2
Stray Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Skinning has to be made possible in BoS, for all the squads to use their own paintscheme. In my unit, 9./JG54, we keep same camouflage for our aircraft. Each theater of war and each type of plane plus each calendar season makes our aircraft unique with same paintjob for all. We got summer and winter camo options, night fighter skin, eastern front camo variations, western front camo variations, late war camo... Every pilot of our unit has his/her own side number and own pilot skin, too. At the end of each campaign we fly, the number of air kills for each pilot is added as kill marks on the tail. If a pilot scored less kills than in previous campaign, no tail update. We do it with 1946 and hope to do it with BoS also. Keeps us on the same page as a squad in the air, allows to identify one another in the air and sends a message: we're a team, we fly same colour at all times. 1

Allons Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 They stated they wont do it no decal type skin change. Over & out, Allons!
SKG51_Joker Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 (edited) I stick with a quote from Konrad Adenauer: Was interessiert mich mein Geschwätz von gestern. I can imagine that opinions change. I still give a vote for a decal type solution, because it would make very much sense. Another quote? Love it, change it or leave it. Since I defenitely would not love a skin concept without possibility to easily identify squadmates, I try to change that. I don´t mind what a publisher states at an early stage of development. Everthing is subject to change. Maybe 777 comes up with an even easier concept, then: fine! Edited April 22, 2014 by ZG15_Falke

616Sqn_Johnny-Red Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 I don't want to be the one to pour cold water on this - as I think it's an essentially interesting idea with some scope for development; but I can't help thinking of the Il-2 1946 decals, which were extremely unpopular: They had different reflective properties to the rest of the skinned model which made them look really out of place; some were over-sized (as was the case with LW Staffel and Geschwader badges), some were very crude, or just historically inaccurate and the colour palette employed was often quite at odds with the naturally-weathered looking finish of the default skins. In addition, fonts used for ID codes numbers were often inappropriate (i.e. comic sans italic tactical numbers). I believe the 1946 modding community made some great advances in rectifying these issues, but it was clearly not a priority for the developer in the face of demand for so many other enhanced features. I'd be inclined to agree with 9./JG54_Stray on decals overwriting skins. Skinners put a lot in to them in the struggle for realism and a coherrent finish. If you want a personal skin or two making, PM me and I'll see what I can do. JR
kestrel79 Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 Would love to see a 79 be added to the stock skins just like in IL2-46
