skullbiscuit Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 (edited) But we have always been the product because of the cash in our pocket, I don't see the problem. Not true...when I buy a car (unless it has OnStar in it) I am buying a car that is not subsidized by other services that the manufacturer is selling along with the car to 3rd parties in order to offer me a lower price for said car. In this case they are wheeling in an information collecting Trojan horse that for most users will not be apparent (they will not care who made it or that they are collecting data on them..they will see only the hardware) It comes down to what you buy and why you buy it and do you consent to surveillance in various forms...that is the issue here with FB now owning OR The other key point is this....if the customer is the advertisers or marketers then features are built into the product which the other "customer" or you....does not care about...or if you know about them you might actually be hostile to. That is a key point in product development where you have two sides to the market...the consumer who buys or uses the product...and the marketers who watch over the use of said product or service you are going to get very differently designed products when you have a one sided vs two sided market for them Edited March 28, 2014 by skullbiscuit
skullbiscuit Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 In your opinion. The Oculus Founder has explicitly stated that there will be NO requirement to have or use Facebook when using the Rift. This goes for developers and end users. I don't think anyone has the right to call them liars until they are proven to be. believe I answered this in a previous post. You will not have to log into FB in order to be tracked if they make you log into a FB supported site in order to use the VR goggles And if you think that the OC founder can be held to his word...then you don't understand corporate goverance...he is now an employee of FB...he gets to state his position, but don't be surprised that this position "changes" in result to "unforeseen" circumstances
DD_bongodriver Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 by the time FB has a chance to even attempt to make a closed system to trap us there will be several other VR players on the market where we can exercise our free will (or be directed to it by targeted advertising) to chose another product.

Let's hope so..VR in various commercial product offerings (more or less prototypes) has been around since at least the late 90's...and to date...there really has been no market success for them..where are they? And of course no one has brought up the prospect of "simulator sickness" yet....this has always been a problem with VR goggles....and it will be interesting to see if they have addressed this problem
DD_bongodriver Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 I addressed it myself, I don't get sick using my DK1
skullbiscuit Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 (edited) I addressed it myself, I don't get sick using my DK1 Wonder though if that is game dependant? in other words if you have a high rez game in which there is a disjunction between the eye and inner ear then what is the % that get sick simulator sickness is documented as being a variable --- not everyone is vulnerable to it to the same degree --- the key will be what % of users out there do get sick and under what circumstances --- from a product success and liability standpoint We've not really had a real large test of VR yet, simply because the market has been small or limited to high end (government)...but you start selling these to consumers in mass as well as introduce all sorts of variability in terms of "experience" and then we will know what % of the population just can do VR goggles Edited March 28, 2014 by skullbiscuit
DD_bongodriver Posted March 28, 2014 Posted March 28, 2014 which is what Oculus are addressing with low persistence and low latency and will be available to us in a non FB closed system with at least the CV1.
