Cavemanhead Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 Per subject, can the updates just us a simple numeric 1, 2, 3... etc instead of the Roman numerals which will only get more confusing as the updates continue? Perhaps, even the old updates could be renumbered? BTW, the status updates are great. All appearances are that BOS will be a great sim. Keep up the good work and keep the screenshots pouring in. 1
VeryOldMan Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 Come on. Roman numerals are not that hard, you basically have to learn them in schools all around the world. You will have to learn them anyway to follow nomenclature of British fighters anyway, so its good to learn them soon 1
Bearcat Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 Well assuming that we get developer updates every week till the sim is released .... What looks better .. Developer update XXXVIII or Developer update 38 ... just to add my 2 cents FWIW...
VeryOldMan Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 I still prefer the first. Its kindof traditional to use roman numerals to things that have several occurrences that needs to be numbered to identify them.Would be dumb if next week we have Pope Venedict the 14. A pope that is the number 14? If you want to use arabic numbers, at least use ordinals. so 38th 1
Skoshi_Tiger Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 Come on. Roman numerals are not that hard, you basically have to learn them in schools all around the world. Just did them an hour ago helping my daughter with her home work! (grade IV primary school!) 1
BlitzPig_EL Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 Well all the updates in each month should have the same initial Mk. number, followed by a letter to designate the week of the update. That would complete the RAF numbering system format...

That would complete the RAF numbering system format... Does that mean that in last week of this month we get the CW version with shortened span? 1
BlitzPig_EL Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 No, the CW designation will be reserved for small bug fix patches...
TJT Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 He's a caveman, ofc roman numerals will be hard *j/k*
79_vRAF_Friendly_flyer Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 I say keep the Roman numerals! They look way cooler!
Rjel Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 Love watching an old movie so I can see the year it was made in Roman numerals at the end of the credits. 1
=IRFC=Jorri Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 I once watched a film with roman numerals at the end. The actors are now all DEAD! Honestly, I don't think it's a coincidence. DO YOU REALLY WANT THIS TO HAPPEN TO US?

JimmyGiro Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 A runner going to participate in the Olympic games had a dream, that he was driving a quadriga. Early in the morning he goes to a fortune-teller for explanation of the dream. The reply is: -You will win, that meant the speed and the strength of the horses. But, to be sure about this, the runner visits another fortune-teller. This one replies: -You will lose. Don't you understand, that four ones came before you? HAHAHAHAHA..... I crucify myself.
JimmyGiro Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 Teacher: What is a forum? Pupil: Two-um plus two-um!

There's a reason Roman Numerals are never used to convey technical data... I'm actually surprised more people aren't bothered by this... Edited February 14, 2013 by Caveman
NZTyphoon Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 I think they should use binary. I IInd this - this is MMXXIII, we're in the XXIst century.

I'm actually surprised more people aren't bothered by this... Which is odd to me. It's perfectly reasonable to do math and technical stuff wich Roman numerals. I'm sure no one has trouble reading something like: III.IIVIVIXIIVIVIIIVVIIIIXVIIIXIIIIIIIIVIIIIVVIIIVIIVIIIIIIVIIIIIIIIVIIIXV
HippyDruid Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 III.IIVIVIXIIVIVIIIVVIIIIXVIIIXIIIIIIIIVIIIIVVIIIVIIVIIIIIIVIIIIIIIIVIIIXV Now copy and paste that into your favorite text to speech program for cheap laughs!
VeryOldMan Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 You're kidding right? There's a reason Roman Numerals are never used to convey technical data... I'm actually surprised more people aren't bothered by this... Roman numerals are classically used to convey ordinal representation of a repeating event or entity. A report that is repeated every period falls under this criteria, as well as Popes, Kings, World Wars, computer games, restaurants from a franchise ... etc... Arabic numerals have a more compact representation that suits them for large numbers better.
W1ndy Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 Fibonacci encouraged the use of Arabic numerals for good reason. Roman numerals are dumb.
Furio Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 As long as developers release regular updates, they can call them the way they like: Arabic, Roman, Aztec numerals. Who cares? By the way: today we use Arabic numerals not because Roman ones are particularly dumb, but because Romans don???
VeryOldMan Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 That was a HORRIBLE joke. You should punish yourself staying away from forums for DXVII days at least
SvAF/F19_Klunk Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 errr.. kind of thinking that maybe we need more updates per week to talk about... when we are actually arguing about .. what numerals to use?

gavagai Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 I'm surprised there is no youtube video for the roman numeral version of XCIX bottles of beer on the wall.
hiro Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Oh a hex converter for roman would be crazy. Or binary to roman. Doing arithmetic and other types of math is harder with ROman Numerals than Arabic Like their decimal, fractions etc is more cumbersome. Zero seems to be an afterthought. But the thing is one just can't beat roman numerals if one wants to convey a sense of historic / epic / grandness to it. Like if Star Wars scroll started with Episode 4 . . . its not as uber as Episode IV Or Mark III has more effect than Mark 3. Arabic is so . . .
Primus_71 Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 They don't even have the concept of zero, them Romans, sack'em!

Simple is better for conveying data. Wondering what the past 25 years as a mechnical engineer would have been like if everything had to have been calculated/reported in Roman Numerals. I definitely agree that Roman Numerals appear "grand" and "historic".
Kongo-Otto Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Caveman you will be banned for AT LEAST for CCCLXV days! (just kidding)
Dooga Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Oh my god I'm supposed to learn something new! Please, nooo... ^ this was irony. Roman numerals tend to become a bit tedious once you get into the thousands, but I think we'll have the game in hands before that... 1
peregrine7 Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 Bahahaha, you know a forum is starved for content when an argument breaks out about the numbering language to be used. Hilarious, you've brightened my day. On another note, no update this week? Just checking in case I missed it...
Freycinet Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 (edited) "us"? Speak for yourself, I don't give a shit about Pearl Harbour Or maybe you meant "US' rather than "us".. If you are Dutch maybe you should "give a shit" about Pearl Harbor since it brought the US into the war, which basically is the reason why your country is not under German or Russian control today. I think your grandparents gave a shit, but you are of course allowed to forget all about it. Just doesn't come across as very clever. And as for Roman numerals? - Why would anyone want to "unlearn" them? They are cool and elegant, of course they should stay for the development updates. Doesn't necessarily have to be the lowest common denominator that sets the standards, does it? Edited February 16, 2013 by Freycinet
