Hy everybody,

I would like to know what you are using to zoom in/out. trackIr ? or Buttons ? And why ?

Thanks in advance,

See you in the sky !

I use buttons and map them to a HAT on my stick. Even though I use TrackIR, I find using buttons for zoom much more functional.

I have trackir but zoom with a thumb-four-way button on the throttle (in, out, reset).

I use the same button when zooming in vr, though then there is only the zoom in command.

I am also using buttons (HAT) on my stick, close to the thumb:

  • forward - zoom in
  • back - zoom out
  • right - 'turn on' the usless sunfilter
  • left - change sight mode
  • push - pull sight towards the pilot

Hy,

Thanks all of you for the answers !

It seems like buttons are much more appreciated than zooming with trackIr : )

I was using trackIr but I was having trouble in records …

Now I am using buttons

Thanks to all of you !

See you in the sky !

I have my right toe brake axis assigned to zoom view and just have HOTAS buttons for the L and R brakes. Zoom view is used much more than braking. Brakes are only used briefly for taxiing. Zoom view is used constantly.

It allows a completely hands free use of the zoom which is even more beneficial in sims like DCS A-10C where every one of your HOTAS buttons has an actual assignment that is used constantly. Plus an axis assigned to zoom view is very good because you can change the FOV instantly or gradually. It’s very intuitive.

I have zoom mapped to the top wheel on my x56 throttle.

i don’t like the default zoom (not enough peripheral vision) and using a momentary zoom forces me into that as a default. It would be nice to use the thumb stick, but that means I also have to use the thumb stick to zoom out.

i keep it zoomed all the way out 90% of the time, and only dial in the zoom when taking potshots at a bomber or ground attacking.

i “zoom” normally by just leaning my head forward to make the area around the crosshairs bigger.

I use the hat under my thumb on the joystick.  Up to Zoom in and Down to Zoom out.   I don't use a button to reset it to 'unzoomed' as I prefer to put it back to whatever is most appropriate for the situation and the aircraft.

Im using hatswitch for 3 stage instant/fixed zoom (wide, center/midrange and zoom on gunsight). I think its much better than any gradual zoom including trackir/edtracker head zoom.

Did yours just 'work' in-game when you mapped it?  I have it mapped to one of my wheels on my X45 and it shows that it's working in the curve 'testing' part (where you set the deadzones, etc), but it does nothing in-game.  Works fine for me in DCS.  Any ideas?

EDIT:  Figured it out.  Needed to put it into the Pilot view setting, not Camera view.  Works now.

Your idea is wonderful, but IL-2 doesn't recognize the axis of my Logitech for this function.
Any tips on how you did it?

Throttle thumb hat on WW or TM devices forward zoom in, aft, zoom out, and center push for reset zoom. Worked great on both my old TM Warthog throttle and the WW Super Taurus; they are hold functions for zooming in and out. Some buttons require you to enable the hold or continuous function to function correctly.
