thoughts on this game from a sim noob after a few months of playing

In short, i'm very happy.
I got into flight sims from sky gamblers with a gamepad, then tried war thunder for a month or two before getting annoyed, now i've been playing IL2 for a couple of months, have a full HOTAS setup, just got a quadrant for CEM and am getting my feet wet, and look forward to playing it every night.

  • The training wheels the game gives you are very helpful. I've steadily been taking them off and finally made the jump to limited ammo last night (got 4 out of five planes in my f4 in about 8 minutes, when with unlimited ammo and aim assist it took me 40 minutes to slowly wear down the same only a month ago)
  • The combo of the whole "when we update the engine, all the games you bought will improve" and the "pay for a game still under development and get it as we complete it" thing is REALLY nice: both the knowledge that it's always going to get better, and new stuff is going to drop constantly without me being nickeled and dimed.  Feels like waiting for Christmas, or for returns on an investment. I can't overstate how satisfying that is.
  • It's actually possible to play the game in small doses, for an hour or so a night, and feel satisfied. No addiction, no burnout, easy to pick up and put down, etc.
  • it's actually fun to improve at one's own pace with this game, that's not a given for a lot of games.
  • above all, the time I've put in reading and learning and practicing feels like it's being rewarded, not like i'm putting in 'work.'

Just thought i'd share. Thanks to the devs and the community.

Good post von_Michelstamm.  It is refreshing and interesting to see how new players feel towards what the old hands take for granted.  We have patches dropping all the time with new content and even updates to the older stuff.

Sometimes it is easy to forget just how hard these guys work to keep BoX fresh.

A very solid experience you shared Michelstamm, I always enjoy seeing what a fresher pair of eyes can see. As an older player I hope to see the devs improve the older planes and improve performance with more use of the cpu/ram.

Also the unlimited ammo can really spoil a person. I like to turn it on for practice flights and I get use to it. Then for real flight missions it feels like there is almost no ammo. I almost want to say to never turn it on because it’s almost addictive.

Agreed very good post that hits the important points.

I'm a returning player that re-qualifies as a noob after taking a few years off (last flight was in 2015) after slamming hard into the burnout wall.  Prior to that I flew sims from Sublogic FS II in 1983 to MSFS and CFS series, Il2 '46, Xplane, FSX etc.  Really enjoying dipping my toe back in the water due to fresh content development and a really nice modern-feeling platform with solid performance. Heck of a change from the days of tweaking just to get 24FPS.  Catching a random YouTube video of the FW190 D9 pulled me back in, but ironically have yet to even fire it up, I'm enjoying digging into other planes that have come out that I didn't think I'd like but now love and have paid dividends to learn (HS129, A20, P39, JU88) while knocking off all the rust.

Most importantly, great multiplayer community and support, couldn't find better folks to get shot up by ?

I can only join, I play IL2 since 2001, only offline and even if I bought BOS in 2013 and was initially disappointed, today I am very enthusiastic. Unfortunately, the offline players will forget a bit. There are not enough planes to find the right mood ("IA" Fw 189, Hs 123, Li2 Pe8 SB 2M TB 3 DB 3 SU 2 Fi 156 and much more)

Good post Von_M etc. Methinks you are tackling this with an eggs celent altitude (or something similar).
