Internet Connection not Required for Gameplay

I'd like to see a model - similar to other games - where you validate your serial/game once and it doesn't require an internet connection to check updates and validate the game every time you play. It's bothersome to have to go online if you're gonna play SP or edit a mission. 

 

One question that I haven't found a clear answer so far is: what happens if Steam, Desura or any other DLC distributor goes out of business? Will the studio provide us with an alternative way to get our games working?

 

I had a problem once, after upgrading my rig and changing HDDs. DLC distributor client could not validate the game I had re-downloaded and re-installed from my account with them. A generic error window popped up with little information. Distributor and Studio where pushing the responsibility to the other. It took more than 20 days to sort things out and the "fix" for this was the distributor issuing me another serial. After this episode, if the game is available on physical media, I'll go for it.
