Finnish 109´s

Hi, I have a few questions about 109´s in Finnish service.

 

1) Did they use them as Jabo´s? (Or had bomb racks for them in storage at least?) I have found a model kit (1/72 Kora model) which includes schemes of G-6´s with bomb racks for four SC50´s. I have googled it and have found nothing.

 

2) Did they use BF 109 G-4? I know they used G-2´s and G-6´s (and I think one or two G-8´s, rebuilt for fighter purpose only). I have found a color scheme of Oiva Tuominen´s "G-4" (with big red zero on engine cowling) but I am not sure whether it isn´t a late G-2.

Hi, I must say no to both. They were only used as fighter role. And according to serial numbers there were no G-4's. There were some G-2's that did not had ATA 1.3 restriction though, but it was advised not to use ATA 1.42 to save the engines. At least MT-224 seemed to be that kind of G-2 according to Kyösti Karhila's memoirs.

I thought so. Luukanen in "Fighter over Finland" also didn´t mention such use of 109 or G-4.

My Father likes to talk to me about Finnish airforce in 1939-1944.

If i remember correcly according to him when i asked about this same thing he said  that Finns removed MW 50 because it would worn the engine faster.

 

 

Since Finns lost planes slowly the Bf 109 needed to last long time and it was difficult to get replacement parts from Germany.

Yes MW 50 did come with some replacement planes but they were removed.

 

Some planes did come with wing cannons but they were removed from most of the planes but some were used. ( 14x  Bf-109 G6/R6 )

Also bomb racks were removed.

 

Finns also got few Bf 109 G-2/Trop and Bf 109 G6/AS  models from replacement planes

 

Finnish Bf 109's had installed dust filters for most planes.

Finns did not recieve G4 models.

 Also 2 x Bf109G-6 had the bigger comoressor and propellor making them better at altitude. Needless to say popular among pilots.
