Hi All. I understand that Microsoft is to stop support for XP in the near future, that means that Windows 7 is now last in line ! At the moment my OS is Windows 7, .

When Windows 8 was first released there where mixed reports regards its reliability, I read a post on the old IL-2 1946 sometime back that flight simmers should not touch it with a barge poll ??

Is this still the case or has it now been updated to suit all users ? if possible i would like some feed back before i decide to change over to Windows 8 in the near future.

Or is there no real advantage to go over to 8

Cheers.  JM.

Why fix what is not broken?

Its not a question of anything being broken, I would just like to know if a flight simulation like Battle of Stalingrad works well if my OS was Windows 8. I thought that was what i was asking in my post, that if i had decided to install Windows 8 later that there would be no problems not only with BoS but any other games.

I an e to run windows 8 on a Mac Pro using bootcamp. Only windows that is supported. It works fine with BoS. Can't tell you anything about relative performance as I never ran any other version on the mac.

One thing is obvious- Windows 8 is weird.

Weird?  in what way?

Windows 8 is built mostly for mobile devices so there is not really a task bar down there and the start menu is gone. Myself I don't like it although it seems stable and efficient because I am always looking for things that were simple to find in other versions of windows. Then again I did not work long enough with it to know.

Yes, 8 would run IL2 as well as windows 7. But if I were you I'd stick with 7. Also not supported doesn't mean not working anymore. It means no updates anymore. But windows 8 ain't bad it's just different.

I run 8.1 on my machine -- it's really not as bad as people make it out to be (IF you're using 8.1).  You can customize most of it so that the metro UI becomes a glorified search bar, lol.  Compared to 7, 8 feels much snappier, and I have had almost no issue regarding game compatibility.  Generally speaking, if it plays on 7, it plays on 8.

My wife has a laptop that came loaded with Windows 8.  She hated it!  About two weeks ago Microsoft threw in the towel on Windows 8 and started giving free updates to Windows 8.1 for all those with Windows 8.  She promptly downloaded the new version and reports that it is almost back to being as good as her old OS.  Keep in mind that her desktop old OS is Vista!  She is still jealous of my Windows 7 OS.

Windows 7 isn't for sale anymore but is still supported by MS and will be for quite a while. That means you still will get security patches and bug fixes. I don't have Win8 on my system yet, but my daughter has it on her laptop at college and has had zero problems and no complaints with it.

Yeah, it's different but I think it is potentially very easy to use after you learn some of its new UI conventions. I've heard it performs better than Win7, but can't verify that. Also, isn't there an update available (now or very soon) that will bring back the Start button for old dogs who can't learn new tricks?

If you have 7 on your computer there is no reson what so ever to get 8.1 unless you are forced to do so.

BOS runs OK on 8.1 but its a pain in the äss to shift from 7 to 8.

Oh!  There is one game that I absolutely struggled to run on windows 8, and that is Red Orchestra 2.  Not sure if it's due to windows 8 or not, but when I got a new PC I had a lot of trouble getting it working.  If you're a fan, maybe keep that in mind.

RO2/RS works just fine on my WIndows 8.

I would say Windows 8 is the best Windows ever (yes it feels faster) though I haven't upgraded to 8.1. Got no problem running all games and softwares on Win8.

S!

Using Windows 8.1 64-bit without problems. If using Windows 7 no reason to get 8.1 in my opinion.
