Makes me wonder if they will actually release a consumer Oculus Rift this year. I kind of doubt it now.

 

I'll still wait. Don't want to spend that much money twice, but who knows what improvements they'll make in the end.

I think the consumer version will be out before the end of the year, ready for Christmas.

I would order one now if I knew there was a physical IPD adjustment on the new prototype, but there has no mention of any adjustment.  I will probably have to wait to see the specs of the consumer version.   Hopefully the BOS developers will buy the new prototype, as it will have most of the specs of the OR consumer release version, that should allow them to further fine tune BOS before release.

I guess I'm lucky with my average Joe IPD, feel quite sorry for all the squat headed freaks that need the physical adjustment ;)

To be honest I think screen door will never be eradicated, it's not hard to see pixels if you look closely at a screen through magnifying lenses, for me even on DK1 the screen door effect fades into insignificance subject to the level of immersion you experience.

I guess you'll be able to get the most out of it and enjoy the experience of flying with it before OR gets the unavoidable teething probs properly ironed out. And furthermore, you'll get trained for the OR head tracking system.

edit... I ordered one anyway...if it doesn't work for me...I should be able to sell it to a buddy with a more average IPD.

There's one posted elsewhere on this forum that projects the image directly onto the retina, with no screen-door issue.

just do it like i did. i sold my DK1 1,5 months ago vor 400 euro on ebay since i was knowing there would be a DK 2.0

Not far away from this is Sony's Project Morpheus, but just for PS4 so far and with a 90º FOV. Right now, I don't give a dime for it, nevertheless. Sony has developed so many VR devices with zero commercial results that they seem not to take it seriously enough to make to the maket a reliable product. And now they have to face OR outstanding headset competition. Nope.  :mellow:

you will not be sorry! you get a lot of immersion for your money, and a 'finished' product for less then 1/3 the price. I bought a new 144hz monitor instead, for more money then the O.R.

How is the screen door issue on the HD version compared to the original? Anyone have any word on this?

It's obviously going to be better in terms of the screen door but I still don't understand why it's considered a major issue at all even on the DK1.

I have the DK1, I would get around the keyboard problem by using all my most important functions on a HOTAS, and for programs that support it I would use a clickable cockpit so I would never need the keyboard.

Well, imagine trying to play something like ArmA with it, and needing to spot a person walking along at a half or full kilometer away, the screen door would make this exceptionally difficult. I think Dslyecxi on youtube puts it rather well, if perhaps a bit at length. I should note that I haven't had the chance to try one of these, but at least for the sorts of games I would like to use one of these with, not being able to spot contacts at great range due to resolution would be a major draw back.

The IL-2 BOS PR team, should organise a LAN contest between teams supporting each of the respective VR technologies. The winning team get their VR system nominated as the IL-2 'official' system.

 

Present compatibility contenders would be OR and Avegant Glyph; with Sony being too 'proprietorially' introspective to matter.

 

If these companies really supported gamers, rather than just flattering us as rubes, then they would meet the challenge as gamers.

Obviously if individual users set their own bars for very specific requirements it will be difficult for the Oculus to satisfy everyone, I have yet to try a HD version but I find DK1 is only just short of the mark for useful distance and am confident the consumer version will do the job.

Spotting aircraft at a distance could be a problem, or it could be easier to spot given how close the eyes are too the screen, even if it isn't sharp.  Either way the immersion level will be higher with the OR than without it.   I have a hard time spotting aircraft at a distance anyway so tend to join up with people who can.  A decent HOTA like the X55 has more than enough inputs too make the keyboard unnecessary.  We should no more about the benefits and problems of using in the Rift when the BOS beta enables the OR.  The DK2 should start seeing the light of day by July, and the OR enabled BOS around the same time.

The reason I added a CH Throttle Quadrant to my setup was to add more intuitive buttons and levers I could identify by blind touch. I'm preparing for the inevitable VR experience that may be even closer than I thought.

Hi Charlo, like you I have the CH stick, throttle and rudder pedals. I have been toying with getting the quadrant for a while but have read several reviews about them being a bitch to set up?

 

How did you find getting them set up and do you use the CH Control Manager? I don't and don't particularly want to.

 

And more importantly, does it add much to immersion?

Well, that would work, as long as i can sell the kit before they announce a consumer version. :biggrin:

 

Hm, i'm really curious what the main difference will be between this dev kit and the consumer variant and if the difference will be worth the wait.

 

I doubt they'll upgrade the screen any more (as long as they really release the consumer version this year) and i can't think of anything else that would be a massive improvement from this dev kit.

Surely it will be worth. My guess on diffrence is that CV1 will have a camera for seethrough and 2560x1400 screenresolution. And most likely a sleeker design.

Maybe they put some FOV increase on top of that. Other than that - no clue!

Think we'll need at least 1440p for hardcore flight sims - especially online mp. 1080p is great for immersion but for spotting far off contacts, picking out ground targets, etc. it's not good enough with all those extra pixels it has to push around compared to a monitor at 1080p. Not sure I'd be a buyer at 1080p except for games like Star Citizen or Elite Dangerous maybe.

You all are right, I need to look at the bright side ^.^ I'm just extremely interested in proper VR, can't wait for the finished oculus.

Fear not, many people overestimate what they expect to be good enough for their perceived issues, 1080p is probably going to be surprisingly useful and the final consumer version will be better.

Yep, +1 to that. But 1080 looks good anyway and you finally can aim properly enough - couldn't do that with 720p version.

In an interview i watched they said that the DK2 is "feature complete"  so Im not to sure what is going to be revamped for the CV1, most likley the weight, and poss, the ergonomics, but I think what we see with the DK2 will be very close to what we see in CV1.

I am soooo keen on this. I could never quite get into the TrackIR thing, even though I know it must be a great, immersive addition. But this, this is something else.

Ill try and find the interview that says its featurw complete. I hope that the screen indeed is upgraded.

I believe I mentioned it acouple of months ago here. Yes, technically it's compatible, "morally" - as well. Now waiting for rifters to add TrackIR functions to it.
