II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I am interested in the oculus but will wait for the bugs to get worked out first. In the meantime I am perfectly happy with my TIR5 and 40" monitor. I was wondering, however, how long before Sony or some other competitor either makes a competing product or buys Oculus out? Currently, the OR seems a bit bulky. Is it also slightly overweight for extended play? The concept is great and there ought to be several others who can/will do VR devices and probably with larger research budgets/lower component prices. Competition is usually a good thing. At least in the realm of development and pricing.
JG27_Chivas Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 The current prototypes are large with a lot of empty space so they can continually change out and test internal componants. The consumer version will have a much smaller more compact form factor. There has been no weight issues even with the current bulky prototypes. There will be a lot of competitors. This weeks GDC should showcase a number of them. The Oculus Rift development team currently has atleast 100 million in development funds, so they really don't need anyones help, but that doesn't mean a major company won't try to buy them out, as VR is the future.
DD_bongodriver Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 DK2 is announced and available to pre-order, consumer VR is just around the corner. http://www.oculusvr.com/blog/announcing-the-oculus-rift-development-kit-2-dk2/ 2
