I'm reading 'Tank Men' at the moment. Interesting account of the darker side of tank warfare for those who demand realism. Apparently after an engine hit you typically had 10 seconds in a Churchill before the flames reached the turret, and 3 seconds in a Sherman.

Also some Germans preferred taking a hit in a Pz IV to a Panther, because the Panther armour would prevent high velocity shot from exiting the vehicle and it would ricochet around chewing up the crew.

Both of those things are highly contextual - Sherman tanks eventually received better ammo storage, and the Panther's "shot trap" was also eventually fixed.

My Father was in the 13th/18th Hussars and drove a Duplex Drive Sherman Tank, he named "Bobcat" after the Bob Crosby jazz band, onto Sword Beach on D-Day, I still have his memoirs written in a tiny diary. Here is the FB page I put up dedicated to him and his wartime adventures.

The updated Sherman he drove was fitted with a (Tiger Killer) 17lb gun, and the co-driver compartment was filled with ammo when they went into battle. His tank was, however, knocked out by a Tiger in a small German village called Waldefeucht, he told me they initially had the drop on the Tiger, but one of the crew jammed the the turret with a book he had been reading and put down carelessly, they couldn't bring the gun to bare so the Tiger got the first shot in and knocked out their tank. The shell went through the drivers compartment, just behind my Dad, the crew bailed thinking he was dead. He managed to crawl out of the co-drivers hatch over the live ammo and drop down on the opposite side and out of the Tigers view. he was wounded in the back and leg with shrapnel. After a spell in hospital he recovered, but always sported a slight limp.
