Chuck_Owl Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svzwj8fYPeQ This great intro video on the Yak-1 makes the wait even harder! 10
Finkeren Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 The early Yaks aren't much to look at in pictures or profile drawings, but in motion they really come into their own. The small, compact airframe shows an astonishing agility in the air.

Finkeren Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 I love tiny planes because they desintegrate when facing my "Me190" 3 cannon bird. Well you might be surprised. The Yak-1 is likely no less durable than the LaGG-3, in fact it might be more so. Ofc anything will disintegrate when hit by 1x20mm, 2x15mm and 2x7.92mm.
71st_AH_Hooves Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 As I posted on the video, this clip makes me WANT TO FLY, I appreciate people than can generate a positive emotion from their art work. 2
Volkoff Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 (edited) That was a very lovely video. I hope to try that nimble Yak-1 Series 69 out, some weekend, soon. MJ Edited March 12, 2014 by =69.GIAP=MIKHA

smink1701 Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Did they improve the flame effect in the video?
ACG_Kraut Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Love the video! Watched it a few times now. Really great to see the Yak-1 in action! Same here! Can't wait to see it in my Revi !

Nil Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 I love tiny planes because they desintegrate when facing my "Me190" 3 cannon bird. 3 cannon? Do you count the smaller ones as one? ...isn't it 2x20mm, 2x15mm and 2x7.92mm?
Finkeren Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 3 cannon? Do you count the smaller ones as one? ...isn't it 2x20mm, 2x15mm and 2x7.92mm? Since when does the Bf 109F have 2x20mm cannons?
ShamrockOneFive Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 (edited) Not sure what a couple of you are on Bf109F-4 and G-2 both have the same armaments. 1xMG151/20 20mm cannon hub mounted 2xMG 17 7.92mm light machine guns Optional 2xMG151/20 gunpods mounted on the wings So the Bf109 can either have one or three cannons. The F-4 model did not carry a 15mm option... that would be the F-2 which was the first use of the MG151 type weapon on the Bf109 series, however, the MG151/15 15mm was found to not pack enough punch. A few Bf109F-2s were field modified with the larger 20mm cannon and it later became standard. Edited March 12, 2014 by IceFire
Nil Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 (edited) Since when does the Bf 109F have 2x20mm cannons? When you put pods on it you get 3? But I noticed the he wrote 190 instead of 109 (I guess thats what he meant since he used ME not FW) and it was not possible to edit EDIT-> The main thing is that it clearly says 190 not 109!! MG 151/20 pods only became common for the Gs.

Interesting. You have a source on that? I've never seen that come up anywhere in any of my readings... not to say that it didn't happen, just never seen anything.
6./ZG26_Gielow Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 I said "Me190" because with those 2 extra cannons you get very close to FW190 firepower. I love the 109 but the 190 killer punch is really perfect to my surprise attacks technique developed over the years in online servers. Flying the 109 with 3 cannons give me a good idea of the 190 will look like. But I wont have the 3 cannos setup drag penalty on 190. Vulcher bird !!
JtD Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 (edited) Interesting. You have a source on that? I've never seen that come up anywhere in any of my readings... not to say that it didn't happen, just never seen anything. We have the same gun pods in Il-2:1946 and we've had this discussion on this board a year ago. You need to change the barrel of a MG 151 to make it either 15 or 20 mm. Takes like 5 minutes. The two calibres were tested in parallel and introduced in parallel. There are pictures of F-4 with 15mm gondolas and 20mm gondolas. The F-4, and that's only the R1 submodel, could and did use both. Normal F-4 could not use gun pods. The 20mm did better overall, and the 15mm had pretty much disappeared when the G was introduced, though it still can be found in the manuals and I wouldn't bet on the 15mm to never have been used with it. All G fighter models were able to use gun pods. Galland had a Bf 109F with two 20mm wing cannons, which was the only 109F to have two 20mm cannons. Edited March 12, 2014 by JtD

smink1701 Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Does anyone else think the Yak looks a lot like the Lagg? What are the main differences in the planes???
Bando Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Does anyone else think the Yak looks a lot like the Lagg? What are the main differences in the planes??? LOL. I had exactly the same. When I saw that first video I had to see it again to see some differences, and I could not tell who was who. So, yeah, I think it looks like the Lagg too. A lot....
Chuck_Owl Posted March 12, 2014 Author Posted March 12, 2014 (edited) Just looking at it, I can see a couple of differences... I noticed was the oil radiator and radiator under the nose, the manifold exhaust, the canopy rear, the larger ailerons on the Yak, the wing shpae, the different position of the fuel tank trap door, the pitot tube on the wings, the prop spinner, the fairing on the landing gear... Requiem Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 (edited) Amazing video, thanks for it! Was that a 1st person bailout at 1:50??? You can enter first person during the bailout after a certain point by pressing F1. You can't be first person during the actual sequence where he climbs and falls out though due to difficulty in animation IIRC. Edited March 12, 2014 by SYN_Requiem
Finkeren Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Biggest giveaway by far is the shape of the tail fin. Else the slightly "humpbacked" look of the Yak is a good indicator.
ShamrockOneFive Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 (edited) Does anyone else think the Yak looks a lot like the Lagg? What are the main differences in the planes??? Visually they are very similar. They also share the same engine but they were born of different design teams arriving at similar places but with a few key differences. You can read a fairly good overview on these pages: http://www.airpages.ru/eng/ru/yak1.shtml http://www.airpages.ru/eng/ru/la3.shtml Lacks some details and they don't have the exact match to the LaGG-3 and Yak-1 models that we'll have in-game but it should give you an idea. Both have the VK-105PF which was an upgrade of the earlier VK-105P and PA engines so they both have the same amount of power available, however, the Yak-1 is anywhere between 200 and 400kg lighter owing to its construction techniques. Both Yak and LaGG shed a lot of weight and gained aerodynamic refinements as they went along but the earlier versions still left a lot to be desired. Still... pilots regarded the Yak-1 as being fairly easy to handle whereas the LaGG-3 was more difficult. Loft showed us how easy it is to get out of a spin in the Yak-1 on today's livestream as an example. The LaGG is just too heavy whereas the Yak is not quite on par with the Bf109F-4 but it can sustain a fight. The LaGG does have a couple of advantages mind you... its construction can absorb more battle damage and early on it was fitted with more armament options. If we expand the theatre at some point and go to Kursk then I expect we'll see the Yak-9T with a 37mm cannon as standard. To tell the difference... the radiator scoop on the lower chin is much larger on the Yak series (until the Yak-3) and the tail is more upright than on the LaGG-3 or La-5.
