I've spent the past month or so playing just practice missions on bots on warthunder on full sim control, really honing in my gunnery and control. Still a ways to go, but it's a big improvement.

I got impatient planning a pc build and just partitioned my MacBook and installed IL2. Though under specced, it seems to run fine on high quality graphics. WOW! Now i have a DelanClip on order and bought a VKB gladiator (got tired of waiting for them to get their act together and let me buy a gunfighter pro).

Control mapping is a bit annoying — I miss the option to overwrite other mappings without having to search for them and delete them, and above all the fine controls (for example, being able to change axes to incremental input an shifting their starting input right and left, would be great for things like setting the x56 joystick's mini stick for gradual zoom, and changing its default position to something more zoomed out).
But the good: the graphics, flight control, everything just feels so damn nice. And no nonsense with upgrading crewmembers. And above all, it seems "easier" in terms of lining up on targets and destroying them — warthunder felt pretty hit or miss on hit detection. Even bombing is more fun, i strapped some 50s to my 109 to take out trains, something that's for whatever reason not nearly as fun or intuitive in WT.
Love this game!

Question: does anyone have a link to the control setup of a WWII pilot who played this game, named Brown? I can't for the life of me find it in the forum. I'd be really curious to see how he tweaked things.

Just did my first mission, escorting Stukas. Didn’t lose a plane, shot down 3 bogies with no aim assist, did a perfect 3pt landing, and taxied with no issues.

by comparison, landing in WT was an unreliable pain and taxiing was a nightmare due to no wheel lock.  What a difference

Welcome, hopefully the new controls and flight model is not to much of an adjustment from WT.

Thanks!

on the contrary it’s solved quite a bit of the frustration from hit detection, etc

Welcome Von, I also made the jump from war thunder a few years ago. It was the best thing I have done. Join a squadron, best way to enjoy the game and learn!

Eric Brown tried the original IL-2, you will find his settings by googling ' Capt Eric Brown IL-2 joystick curves"

However BoS/BoX uses a different interface and these settings are not applicable. To simulate them you would need to apply 50‰ or so noise filter and some judicious curves to give less sensitivity than standard linear setting.

There is a wealth of info to be found in these forum sections

Enjoy

Nice work. Its great to see someone actually desiring to do escort duty. I stopped flying as an attacker because of the fact that nobody would ever escort and I simply died constantly. Hope to see you in the air sometime. As soon as my work schedule changes in the next few weeks Ill be on much more often. I use to put in 100 hours a month, but this month I'm under 20.

Well, it was just campaign mode on easy, but escorts and flying in formation and combined arms seems a big part of the realism and fun.

Hello and welcome! That sounds good. I hope you keep having fun with Il-2.

I switched from WT to IL-2 at the end of last year after a long time and don't regret anything. If you are looking for someone to fly or if you have any questions you can send me a PN.

In this sense have fun!

best regards Rico

Welcome! Glad you have you as part of the community! IL-2's got some great things going for it and I'm glad people are finding out how great it is.

I also jumped from WT to Il-2 recently and it was great decision. I have noticed how far behind WT is especially when i tried WT after a month of flying in Il-2 - there was no going back. Here everything is better, more detailed, more real and more satisfying.

One difference I noticed, hitting planes is easier but killing planes is harder. With an F4, I pummel i6s at 220m with correct convergence, and see the mineshells going off all over them (including wings), but I rarely break them up. Fuel spraying everywhere, but flames are rare. This is with aim assist, too.

Watching Der sheriffs vids with the same plane he seems to blow them apart more frequently. Usually I’m on their six, perhaps their armor is the problem? Or did damage models change in the past couple of years?

Which allied wwii plane has the least armor?

Also, First mod installed. No plane type listed, nor distance, box, and now just a tiny triangle. It’s a perfect transition to full realism. I really have to work to keep track of planes, but can find them quick enough I don’t lose them entirely for very long.

Welcome ?

When you do the key binding and it shows a conflict, you can select to delete the other binding (like you I used to waste time trying to find and delete).

There is a box (?) In the corner of the binding box, if you click on that it should give you the option ?

The damage model did change earlier this year. That said, you should still be able to knock an I-16 out of the sky with just a few well placed 20mm bursts. Total structural failures are a bit more rare than before but if you managed to get a few cannon shells on target you should have started a fire, knocked out the pilot or controls, and crippled the plane.

I'm not sure which Allied fighter is most susceptible to damage. Spitfire's can go down fairly quickly when hit I suppose.

No conflict if you use the same button on different planes. The game shows key bindings overlap, but cleverly knows it shouldn`t always just overwrite earlier bindings automatically.

Ha, so i'm not imagining things RE: wings coming off! Good. Seems more realistic this way.
One of the things i'm loving about this game is predictability. I shoot, i hit. If i miss i know why. I'm sensing a steady improvement to my gunnery (now have auto-aim off)

Other than a bit more control over the control mapping (war thunder is great in this regard) the only thing that really irks me so far is that I can't save default skin, load out, etc. settings for planes.
