pilotpierre Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Do you think I would get much of an improvement with this;Gigabyte N770OC-4GD GTX 770 OC, PCI-E 3.0, 4GB 256-bit DDR5, 1189/7010 MHz, 2 x DVI, HDMI, DP, WF, 3 Fansover what I have now which is;Galaxy GTX 580 PCI-E 2.0 1.5GB DDR5 384-bit 772/4008MHz, 2 a dual link DVI, 1 x mini HDMI 3 x fan. My other harware is in the sig. I am noticing some stuttering in BoS now in the latest scenerios where more a/c are in the action. I realise the game is not fully optimised yet, but I think the 1.5 card may not cut the ice when the game is full blown.
Nage Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 @Pierre - you would notice an improvement but nothing spectacular. I have an 660Ti which is very close to 770 (with 2 GB of VRAM) and i7 on 3.6Ghz and it runs BOS just fine. I dont have stutters but I noticed that some missions are slower, like the new Stuka ground attack mission. That is because of how AI works in BOS engine and it has a ig impact on CPU. So the faster the CPU you have the mission will run better. I hope they will optimize this and that they will bring back the custom graphic settings as currently super sampling is hidden inside the presets and cant be switched off (and it has a significant impact on perfromanse.) With stutters SSD disk can help.
pilotpierre Posted March 4, 2014 Author Posted March 4, 2014 Thanks for the responses guys. Tikvic as per my sig I have a SSD. I'm not really inclined to spend $500 Aust for a new card for a "nothing spectacular" improvement. I might hang off until BoS gets optimised and take it from there.

I see you have i5 2500k which is overclocking beast. It can go well beyond 4 Ghz without even raising the cpu voltage (so there wont be higher temps etc.). Try this first, its not complicated. Then you can always upgrade the video card. I would do just that. I would overclock the CPU and I would buy a new card when BOs goes gold. Then, you should be able to find ever better card for the same amount of cash plus you will save more. Edited March 4, 2014 by tikvic
HippyDruid Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 I've been weighing up the idea myself pilotpierre. I've come to the conclusion, that it would be best to wait. #1 The game may be further optimised as time passed. #2 Video cards will get cheaper with time, so what I was to buy now will be cheaper eventually anyway. #3 BoS isn't using Crossfire at the moment, and I would like to see how that changes performance. ...and so we wait!
Nage Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Still, would be very interesting to see how his pc would handle the BOS missions (lets say, Stuka ground attack mission) with his CPU raised from 3.3 to lets say, 4.0 Ghz. Then we will see if its the game not optimised yet or its the CPU which needs more speed.
pilotpierre Posted March 4, 2014 Author Posted March 4, 2014 I've always been lairy about overclocking plus I wouldn't have a clue how to go about it. I'll go and see if I can find the manual and give it some thought.
pilotpierre Posted March 4, 2014 Author Posted March 4, 2014 Just googled it, bit too bloody complicated for me, plus from what I read it appears I would also need to install a cooler??? I have an antec case with 3 fans, 2 of which are variable speed, the psu has its own fan, the processor has its own fan and the 580 has three fans. I would still need an additional cooler?
Nage Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 (edited) The trick with the overclocking without raising the voltage of your CPU is that temps stays the same or slightly higher so no need for better cooler. And overclocking the i5 without raising voltages is just a few "knobs to pull". There are nice guides on the net and theres always a chance some of your friends is familiar with this so you can ask them to come to your house. I was done in 15 min with OC in my friends house and I got cookies and beer. Yeah Edited March 4, 2014 by tikvic
Pudfark Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 @pp I also have the same card you are interested in. I do not own BOS, yet. I do very much believe that it will handle BOS with no problems. I will relate this to you, my experiences over the last several years.... Just before, Cliffs of Dover, came out, I went from an Nvidia 8800GT to a GTX 465 in order to run the sim...better. That 465 gave me lots of stuttering and never worked correctly in COD, very frustrating. On the recommendations of others in the COD forums...I then bought the latest GTX570HD with 2.5 gig Vram. No difference, still massive stuttering. Three months ago, I bought my Gigabyte N770OC-4GD GTX 770 OC, PCI-E 3.0, 4GB 256-bit DDR5, 1189/7010 MHz, 2 x DVI, HDMI, DP, WF, 3 Fans and on a whim, tried COD again. I had a little more FPS and still, massive stuttering...I must explain, all of the testing/playing was done on the stock, steam patched game. I don't believe for one moment that any of the problems I experienced were the fault of the cards or my settings (very conservative). One of the lessons that I learned from COD? You can't overcome bad code, with a better vga card. I do not believe, that BOS, will be the same as COD. I'd advise, that if you have enough "VGA Card" at the moment...to wait until BOS is released before you upgrade. As, others have mentioned...it'll be cheaper for the same card...and you might have a better selection for a faster one? Should factors dictate that you buy this card now? I believe, that it's a damn good choice. I'm waiting to purchase BOS..until it's in a solid beta state.
pilotpierre Posted March 4, 2014 Author Posted March 4, 2014 Thanks again for the advice all. I think I will wait until release and make the decision then. If I get one, I'll get someone to install it and do the overclocking at the same time.
pilotpierre Posted March 4, 2014 Author Posted March 4, 2014 (edited) The i5 is what I meant wrt overclocking. Btw, every time if see your name in print I get a flashback to a flying tigers escort mission you did for the original, it was a ball tearer. Edited March 4, 2014 by pilotpierre
pilotpierre Posted March 5, 2014 Author Posted March 5, 2014 (edited) My mistake then, I'm fairly sure I played everything you produced though. Can we look forward to some similar input into BoS? Edited March 5, 2014 by pilotpierre
