Finger Four and Flight Integrity

In Single Player is it possible to have flight fly in Finger Four formation and not just in trail or echelon? Also it seems that flight mates do not follow commands and split off on their own unless enemy is very far away. Any suggestions on that?

There my AI team mate almost forced me to take my proper position (in finger four formation) 'defending' his own one

They can fly ladder formation but not finger four.  Maybe down the track.

 

In a flight of four - you can always go the left of leader and fly finger four.  The AI will close up the space.

You can fly in V formation with 4 planes (or as many as you want). Which is like finger four for someone with a very long middle finger.  

 

For all that IL246 had finger four, it had problems too. Although planes could lock into a formation slot in that game if you were flying fairly straight, the AI still had problems with heading changes. I think the high stagger back from the leaders in BoX is there to prevent collisions during formation turns.
