Sokol1 Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 (edited) CH setup (Fighterstick,Pro Throttle and Pro pedals). the ergonomics are bad, especially on the stick. Curious, because the disposition of hats and buttons is basically the same as the acclaimed Cougar/Warthog... C6_Trollbug Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 KG13 and FW190 rudder from Tarmac Aces , and a Warthog throttle ...
Sethos Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 As per my signature, HOTAS Warthog + Saitek Combat Rudder Pedals. Has been gathering too much dust lately, can't wait to take it out for a spin.
NonWonderDog Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 This was hilariously easy to do, using a $20 Teensy 2.0 board to read the buttons. It only had to solder 5 wires and write 50 lines of code and I had all the buttons on the old Thrustmaster F-16 FLCS grip working and recognized in Windows. Then I just chopped the shafts down, bored out the FLCS shaft, and epoxied them together. The final touch was a little flush toggle switch to turn the force feedback on and off (not visible). (For some reason just using the switch didn't work, so there's a little protoboard where the switch toggles the LED that shines on the phototransistor to turn FF off. ) No need to rewire anything in the grip, I just had to read the shift registers with some simple SPI communication code. 95% percent of the code was already written by the Teensy devs. Total cost: ~$100. $50 for the MSFFB and $20 for the F-16 FLCS from eBay, $20 for the Teensy board, and a few bucks for the USB cable and toggle switch. Using an X-52 for throttle. For rudder pedals I just have my Logitech G27 pedals with a GlovePIE script to bind gas and clutch to rudder. I should probably do something about that.
Cybermat47 Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 I use the Logitech Attack 3. Easy to use, long-lasting and cheap.
VeryOldMan Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Why not get a Saitek X-52 and mod it .. Mod the stick to use as a button bay and use the throttle.. or get a Saitek throttle quadrant or CH throttle quadrant or just a CH throttle. Lots of options.. I was so disappointed in that stick.. I launched a campaign at UBI some years ago and wrote emails and lobbied hard for them to come up with a FFB HOTAS .. and they came up with the X-65 instead.. Good luck with it. Make sure you let us know how you like it. Or not. Will let you know. I seen some people complain they have a hard time keeping the joystick input free because they cannot feel exaclty how much pressure they are using. I expect as someone who draws and paints for years I might have enough motor control to avoid that issue I almost bouth a new X52 (my old X45 is too old to be reliable), but the store had X52 bought only after the dolar value increased drastically to our money and the X65 was bought eralier with a better conversion ratio therefore almost same price. Took the chance...
EAF19_Charlie Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Thanks for posting those pics/link Sokol1. You have given me some ideas I like the first pic, the "Fighter runt" but Im not too sure I want to chop a 5/8" chunk out of a Fighterstick. Around the ergonomics, I was not referring to the layout of the buttons, more so what I meant was the trouble reaching the top coolie switch and the red button next to it without having to physically slide your hand up off the base rest in order to reach them and risk accidentally hitting the 2 switches below them at the same time. So again many thanks for your post. Regards. Charlie.

Well I always suffered because it was too SMALL for my hands that always got cramped on it.
...srqbones Posted September 14, 2013 Posted September 14, 2013 I like the CH mod photos. For years I used a full set of TM products, from the serial-port pre-USB days (except for my own rudder-pedals). After years of not flying, about 5 or 6 years ago I got the CH products (Fighterstick, Throttle, and Pedals) after reading reviews that they held up the best, and it may have been when TM didn't yet have another set of "sturdy" products in the USB-style. For view, I use the Track IR 4, but the new VR headset - Oculus Rift - seems to have great potential, almost like the Aladdin's Magic Carpet ride at Disney that I first got to try in the late 1980s or early 1990s when it was still in the Futureworld section of EPCOT. Check out some Oculus Rift links: http://www.oculusvr.com/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oculus_Rifthttp://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23877695http://www.pcgamer.com/tag/oculus-rift/https://www.google.com/search?q=Oculus+Rift&client=firefox-a&hs=3N1&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=fflb&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=3pQhUv3gKvTNsATlhIGgAQ&ved=0CG0QsAQ&biw=1536&bih=801 Now, after a few years of intermittent flying, I still haven't taken the time to 'learn' how to appropriately set up the CH Products software to program with their software rather than using the in-game setup options, as in ROF and War Thunder. Ideally, it would be nice to have a 'standard' set of Stick and Throttle controls that I could uniformly use for all prop-sims, with flaps, mixture, radiator, prop pitch, weapons, etc. all on reasonable hats and shifted-button sets that would be able to be applied across most such sims. If anyone has some tips, control-sets, or tricks to help with the CH setup, I'd be much-obliged. It still confuses me between direct, mapped, and whatever the third option is, and how I know which protocol is being used no matter if I've initiated the utility, turned it off and on, etc... (The enclosed photo, by the way, shows my old TM setup, with a yellow foam 'seat-cushion' on plywood, with two attached 'wings' to where the FLCS and TQS were fashioned, so I could sit in a deskchair with controls to each side (held only by the seat of my pants). The rudder pedals, with black-rubber pads missing and broken SPST buttons for brakes at the tips of the pedals, are just sitting on the seat cushion, and the whole thing is up on speaker stands, just for the photo. With my new CH stuff, they're just on my desk, though velcroed in place.) David Sarasota, FL

The X-52 is a very easy stick to modify because it is modular.. with the X-45 did a lot of cutting and splicing..

=FI=Macca Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Gen, fortunately it is not the stick alone that makes you a feared virtual pilot; )
PauloHirth Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 I have 4 microsoft force feedback2, 1 death, 1 for repair and 2 working OK, you can find and change the boton contacts and still ok, is a great joystic.
Matt Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 TM Warthog, upgraded recently with 7,5 cm stick extension and center stick mount. Can't believe how I was able to use that thing without the extension for nearly two years. If only there would be a FFB mod available for it.
VeryOldMan Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Well the store I bought the X65 I think decieved me, and now I lost a lot of money and cannot get a proper stick to play Il2 Unfortunately was the only store in brazil I could find a decent stick ( even a X52 is very hard to find here ) Well .. seems I will be a premium user without use :/
gavcaMadG Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback II. For me, the best joystick ever made, IMHO. 1

Ranger Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 I have used the X65 for a couple of years. I really like it. As you might know, there is no movement to the stick/gimbals. It took a couple weeks to get used to, but now I'm died in the wool X65. You, of course, can set up 4 preset profiles for the amount of force/resistance that can be changed with the 4 force buttons on the throttle. I don't have any complants, and its always centered.I had to cut up a beer cuzy (ya know, one of those things that keeps the beer cold while you hold it:) and glue to the base of the stick so my hands can reach the upper switches with more ease. I also put friction tape on it, as its kinda slick. I fly really bad so my hands sweat allot Its all metal and has lots of add on gauges and stuff you can put on it. I have not. I had the X45 and X55 prior to this one, and like this best.

Matt Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 Can you import something from another country? Or is that forbidden somehow.
VeryOldMan Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 Can you import something from another country? Or is that forbidden somehow. Issue is.. I would pay 60% taxes over the product + transportation. And the transportation from US to here is roughly 21$ per KG. That means that joysticks arrive here around 500-550$ THEn are taxes on 60% ... The result price is simply... out of reach Once I almost bought a thrustmaster to send to a guy in USA ask him to remove the steel plates inside the stick thatincrease weight and mail it to me
Sturmgeschultz Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 For years all I have ever used was a logitech extremepro. A long lasting wonderful joystick. With RoF I picked up a Trackir 5 and after hearing about BOS I broke down and bought the CH pedals joystick and throttle. I can finally tinker with a full set of controls.
frenchfly Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 Logitech G940, had to fix the throttle rotaries from spiking see how to here (http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/3007420/4.html) and I use Saitek rudder pedals instead of the god awful ones that came with the unit. F

Wolger Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Saitek X52 Pro, TrackIR5 - Haven't got a rudder pedal yet, will get one once my pilotpit is ready. I also have Logitech Extreme 3D Pro - best cheapest joystick with its large and heavy base comes with excellent Logitech Profiler Software..

TheStevedore Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 I just got a thrustmaster hotas x for 47.00 on amazon.com. It's not bad.
II./JG77Timairborne Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 MSFFB2 - the only quality FFB stick available. MSFFB2 - the only quality FFB stick available. I would be afraid to break this with that long of a stick on there. Basic physics, fulcrum + lever=force. Longer Lever gives more leverage. I personally am using an x65f and before that x52. I hated the x52. The 65 takes some getting used to but Its alot more precise.
Matt Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 I would guess that his legs restrict the stick movement. I don't think he can break anything.
JG1_Pragr Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 Does anyone have some experience with this stick? http://flightsimcontrols.com/store/joysticks/cobra-m5/
II./JG77Timairborne Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 I wish I could do some sort of cockpit setup but my wife is already on my ass about the stuff Ive already bought lol.
SYN_Vorlander Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 Does anyone have some experience with this stick? http://flightsimcontrols.com/store/joysticks/cobra-m5/ Hi Herr Pragr, Looks like a very good stick. I do see that you can upgrade the stick for better precision. Possibility to upgrade The joystick is designed to be easily upgraded to a desired level (to be ordered separately): Improved controller - "light" or "pro" version ( supports up to 128 controls) New fully metal mechanism ball bearings based D-MaRS™ rudder function sensor with a http://flightsimcontrols.com/store/joysticks/controller-njoy32-duplicate/ extra € 47,00 and http://flightsimcontrols.com/store/joysticks/twist-rudder-function-upgrade-cobra-m5/ extra € 19,00 so for € 120,00 it should be pretty good.
