Talisman Posted April 12, 2019 Posted April 12, 2019 Hi folks, Just a quick question. Is the Pimax 5k+ capable of providing 6dof out of the box on order direct from Pimax if I purchase now ? I am struggling to understand if I can get 6dof with Pimax. As I understand it, Pimax are not able to provide a base station and without at least one base station (lighthouse) I can't get 6dof with my flight simulation; is that correct? I don't want to purchase a Pimax 5k+ if it is unable to provide 6dof. I am looking to get into VR as soon as possible, but the 6dof thing and base station availability/compatibility is confusing me and I don't feel like I can make an informed decision at the moment; particularly given the expensive nature of any VR purchase. Any information on this topic from folks with knowledge and experience would be gratefully received. Thanks in advance. Talisman
dburne Posted April 12, 2019 Posted April 12, 2019 AFAIK you will have to have at least one base station to get 6DOF.

On the Pimax website you can order controller + base station combos for 300 USD. I have also seen reports of base station incompatibilities on these forums but it is not clear for me if these are happening only for the Vive base stations or for those they are selling on their site too. Not even sure if they are selling Vive base stations or their own design.
BroGrimm1tkcamp Posted April 12, 2019 Posted April 12, 2019 I have a Pimax 5+ and one HTC light house. I have been able to get it to connect and work fine at times. Tracking seems to be fine and I get full 6dof. However, It is not able to pick it up sometimes. I have difficulty getting it to track. HTC has a link box that may be the answer, but I don't have one. I have had a ticket into support @ Pimax but haven't been able to link up with them due to my work schedule. The base stations at Pimax are their own and along with the controllers are on pre-order and not available yet.
fiddlinjim Posted April 12, 2019 Posted April 12, 2019 I placed my base station order in Oct 18 and still haven't received a status of order or a notice of shipment. If playing in the sitting position then a single HTC Vive Sensor will work and give 6DOF and PIMAX base stations are not needed. However as BroGrimm stated their is an intermittent problem with the 5K+ recognizing the Vive Base station and Pimax has not solved the issue yet.
SCG_motoadve Posted April 12, 2019 Posted April 12, 2019 Placed my order of a Pimax 5 K with controllers and base stations in October 23rd, no news, I e mailed to cancel the order many times, even posted it on Pimax forums, and they ignored me and shipped the Pimax, got the headset only , no base stations or controllers, I returned it and filed a claim with Paypal. Horrible company to deal with, zero respect for their customers. So to get your Pimax shipped soon, cancel your order and they will ship it, which is stupid.

Wow sorry to hear that, somehow I am not surprised.
PikAs62 Posted April 12, 2019 Posted April 12, 2019 (edited) The best will be for you to look at ebay etc. for second hand Vive v1 or v2 sensors. Edited April 12, 2019 by Pikas_62
HunDread Posted April 12, 2019 Posted April 12, 2019 On the other hand they sell their stuff to more than 20 countries like Oculus and Vive and they ask the same amount of money in US and Europe (and probably everywhere else). This might be a good reason to go with them in the end when I decide I need an upgrade. I don't even start to tell the story what I am doing and paying to get a STUPID Oculus CV1 cable which died the second time (I might do it later when/if I finally get my hands on it)

The cables are apparently notorious for failing so any input to help others when it happens to theirs can only be good.

I bought one HTC Vive basestation v1.0 when I enroll in the kickstater for Pimax 5K, so I planned well ahead of time. I works fine, but I have initial problems due to some reflections from a picture in the wall with glass. You also need to place the headset at 1.5 meters or more to get tracking. I have been working flawless so far. One vive station is more than enough for seated experience. Pimax 5K+ is compatible with V1.0 and v2.0 basestation. There plenty of vive basestations in ebay or amazon (used or new)

Chiliwili, I Only have the base station and nothing else. I hear a USB link spoken of, is this something I need? Also, did you download any kind of HTC drivers. I am asumming they are not needed and the Pimax only sees the base station, correct?
chiliwili69 Posted April 13, 2019 Posted April 13, 2019 The single basestation (in mode A) is only connected to the power supply, nothing else. No connected to PC or PIMAX. No HTC drivers.
Talisman Posted April 14, 2019 Author Posted April 14, 2019 Many thanks to you all for the responses you have given to this thread folks Thanks to your help I think I am now almost ready to take the plunge into VR. Looks like the way forward for me is to order a Pimax 5k+ and source a single HTC Vive base station, V1 or V2, from elsewhere so that I am ready to go with 6dof when the Pimax 5k+ arrives. I hope the lead time from order to delivery of the Pimax 5k+ headset is not too long.
