Hi.  I'm trying to do the gamma adjustment (0.5) via editing the startup.cfg file... but it seems the value keeps getting reset (and never really gets applied).

I change the value in the cfg and save it, but in the sim, there's no change.  Going into the settings, I see that the value is still 0.8 (....not sure if the interface actually allows anything lower than 0.8 to actually be DISPLAYED though).  Going back to the cfg file, I see it's back to 0.8 again.

Is there some step I'm missing here? (...and why haven't they formally patched the ability to go lower than 0.8 in, since a lot of people are doing it these days, anyway?)

If you make any changes in the settings after changing the CFG file, all settings done in game re-set in the cfg file. However, that doesnt seem to be the problem here.

Are you sure the cfg file isn't set to Read-only? Or if not the file, the file folder its in? I imagine its is write-protected by default.

Honestly I think they haven't patched that ability in since its really not a priority...people who need to set the gamma lower have a way to do so, even non standard, and nobody else cares enough for them to spend a few precious hours coding and testing it. At really low gamma on my machine the game looks terrible, so I just set it to 0.8 and deal with spotting difficulties.

Yes right click on the config file, properties, turn off ‘read only’ open it. Fix the line you want, save it, then properties, check ‘read only’ on again..

that should stop stop the game from resetting the values..

Make sure before each update that you uncheck the ‘read only’ so that the file will properly update,,,

then repeat the process if you want to fix something

You can change it in that file, and it will be 0.5 for example, but if you look at it in game it will say 0.8 even though you set it to 0.5, game will never say its 0.5.

Also if you make any chang to graphic settings (after you set it in that file ) it will reset it to 0.8. So you first set all your settings how you like in game settings, and then you close game and edit gamma to what you wont and dont ever tuch in game settings to avoid reseting it back to 0.8.

Lovering gama helps a lot, 0.5 is maybe extream and depending on your monitor it could be to dark low.

Ya, the folder itself was Read-Only.

It's odd, as often the cfg file itself seemed to hold the value, but then sometimes seems to get reset.  Kind of random.

I unlocked the folder, made sure the cfg was still set to 0.5, then went to lock the folder again... and it WAS locked again (Read-Only)... Weird.  Almost like it didn't unlock (yet it did go though the unlocking all files process).  Either that, or it locked itself up again, by itself.

I just started the sim, and I THINK the gamma is set...  Can't really tell, since there's no means to check the value.  Visually, I'm not sure if it's different.  Sky is (deepish) blue (not washed out).  Cockpit isn't dark in a bad sense... Everything is visible.  So, it might be adjusted.  I was under the impression that the cockpit would end up (arguably) too dark (but, that was the cost of being able to see contacts better in the sky).  But, it seems fine.

I read an old post saying that SSAO should be disabled, Max Prerendered Frames set to 1, Cinematic Camera disabled, to get improved frame rates.  Is that really the case, if you have a good card, but an older i7 CPU?  I'd assume those are all GPU dependant settings.

I'm surprised there's not some simple mod that allows that slider to go to 0 (...not that you'd want to go THAT low, but you know what I mean).  Really not sure why the company themselves don't change it, since so many people are making that change now anyway.

You can know that is set correctly if you first open file and change it and save change, then open file again and see that is changed, then start game and when it loads, close the game, then open file again and if you see that is at value you set then your sure that is correctly changed.

For me only way it gets rested back to 0.8 is if i open settings in game and change something in graphic, then i close the game and i know i have to again set gamma to what i wont.

Yeah, trying to eyeball graphics differences between settings is really difficult for me. For most people probably. You look at it and compare it to a memory and go "is this different? Is it just because I'm looking for it?"

Best way around that is to set the gamma to 0.8, then take a screenshot. Then set the gamma to 0.5 and take a screenshot. Make sure both screenshots are of the exact same scene for comparison (say, looking forward in your cockpit on the ground). Then open each image and put them side by side and look at them. The difference between 0.8 and 0.5 should be pretty noticeable. I found going from 1.0 to 0.8 to be a very big difference, for example. Maybe it seems less different the lower you go?

Cinematic camera IIRC causes blur when looking around, I turned it off because thats' what happened on my rig. I didn't know about the possible framerate things. I don't know enough about the various graphic settings to know what causes the most drag on frame rates.

Ya, some sort of weirdness happening.  Settings seemed to randomly reset.

Anyway, I set the gamma again, and hopefully it will stick this time.

Just wanted to verify there wasn't some step I was missing.

We'll see how the next sessions go...  Thanks!

Windows often resets things when installed in program files,

I have always put the whole install somewhere else to avoid this

Good to know!

Well, it appears to have held last night, I think.  Thanks!
