Hi everybody!

Pimax 5k+ is my first vr hmd and i'm still experimenting with Pitool/SteamVR/Il2 graphics. I got some interesting results using ultra in IL2 graphig settings.

My rig:
i5 9600k @ 4800
asus z390-e
rtx 2080 (driver version 419.67)
16 G 3200 MHz
win 10 home

Basic settings in Pitool (109): Q1, small FOV, 64Hz, no smart smoothing, pp on, hidden area mask on.

I started with balanced settings as it was most recommended by users across forums, trying combinations and testing in quick missions, career and online. SteamVR 80%, Il2 no mirrors, medium clouds, visibility 40 km, distand landscape details normal no AA etc gave me quite steady and smooth 64 fps. After that fps and frametimes were not playable for me.

Then i found pretty good looking and great running low settings from Steam forums. Rock solid fps but a little bit blurry and i started to raise the bar little by little. I wanted more clarity and visibility but still good frames and at some point started to wonder if there are setting that affect either gpu or cpu. So i dialed in high and finally had the courage to try ultra. Surprisingly both seem to work great on my setup. I don't know if high and ultra triggers something in the game engine that utilies more cpu and less gpu. Anyways these are the settings that give me the best eyecandy/performance compared to anything i 've tried and really take's the best out of the 5k+:

Pitool: allready mentioned basic settings
SteamVR: 100%

IL2 (3.012b):

I have to mention that i didn't use any standardized benchmark mission and tested these new settings only few days so this is all very subjective. I'm using fpsVR to monitor performance and testing goes like this:
Quick mission, Kuban coastline, 8+8 fighters, runway start. Dogfighting over forest/city/water. If fpsVR shows acceptable fps and frametimes i ignore it and start to see if everything is smooth.
Career in Stalingrad, runway start, hard, most action in the air and ground. Here i got hiccups when action started on the ground and i was low.
Online server 84/84 pilots. Some lower frames on the ground but once in the air all good.

So there will be more testing. Maybe high on career and somewhat lower ss etc, we'll see. But the bottomline is that now Pimax 5k+ is starting to deliver what i expected at the first place. If Pitool updates makes normal or large fov possible with these settings i would be more than happy!

Loska,

I see that you are using 4K textures and not using the HDR with the HMD.

Curious as to your experience as many forum users stated that 4K Textures should not be used in VR.

I'm not sure where you're reading that. Most of the VR guides for IL2 state that you need to enable 4K textures to improve performance; there is some kind of stutter bug without the 4K textures enabled. If your video card has enough VRAM there's no performance difference between 2K and 4K textures.

Now just open that FOV up a little - go on - you know you want to.  What's an extra 20 degrees over 130 going ta hurt???

Plonk it on Normal FOV in PiTool and see how you go.  Be outrageous and try Wide, it's only 40 degrees over what you are playing now - not much at all - really ??

Come to the dark side.. I think i'll wait for the eyetracking etc :) At the moment i'm quite happy with my settings but normal fov is tempting. It's soo nice in Elite!
