Chevrolet tried too, a long time ago.  I dream of getting a van like this and putting a Tatra V-8 in it.

My first car was a 1968 Kombi. Besides breaking down on the way home and later on spitting out a spark plug (not it's fault - just the fool who cross threaded the plug) it was a good old bus  and I was sad to see it go.
