Cultures sacrified on the altar of profit

This is a very personal post. As a German I grew up with the awareness about the cruelty of the Shoa and it accompanied my coming-of-age. It is not about feeling guilty but after years of studying this subject I realized that I felt an infinite sadness that Jewish culture has been destroyed, extinct from German culture of which it was an inseparable part like a leg or an arm is part of a body - a loss that very few fathom I fear. Jewish culture has been part of German culture since Roman times and it is something that is lost forever or at least for a very very long time. It is sad.

 

 I think that every culture is an incredible expression of infinite human creativity. Don't get me wrong: I do not share every value of every culture but I am aware that this is due to the fact that I grew up in a culture with its own set of values. I also understand that sometimes the values of one culture can be in contradiction to the values of another culture which makes things difficult and may lead to conflicts.

 

Nonetheless it saddens me every time that a culture, in particular an indigenous culture is about to be destroyed and sacrified on the altar of profit. Like what is very likely to happen when the Belo Monte Dam is built.

Remember: These cultures that will be destroyed are unique in the world. They cannot be brought back as the Native American cultures cannot be brought back. It will be lost forever.
